I hate to tell you this but the average voter in this country votes exactly like this.
By average I mean they may know one person on the ballot that they plan to vote on but if multiple offices are on the ticket they have no clue about the rest. It's then by "best" name or R/D.

My understanding is that ballots had already been printed (and many already mailed back) when Smith suspended his campaign.
Kind of a smart strategy if you have a weak incumbent, help the weakest on the other side win their primary

My guess is that Democrats voted in the Republican primary to swing the election and protect the incumbent.
