The world was always what it was. If you are a boomer or Gen x, we were all just kept under control by the people who controlled radio, television, newspapers and magazines. They shaped entire generations without us questioning them.
There is a case to be made that they had integrity at one point and that is how we came to rely on them. But, somewhere between the 50's and the 70's they realized their power and abused that trust. We caught them red handed after the internet took hold. They weren't the arbiter of truth anymore.
Now we are caught trying to interpret information on our own, and there are MANY different interpretations of the same story. The model boomers and Gen x lived under is dead.
To answer your question: the world SEEMED better because we were "protected" from other views. We felt unified and we acted so.
Is it the parable of the "garden of Eden" where the fruit of the tree of wisdom casts man out into the world naked and afraid, having to toil and work for everything?
I think that is an appropriate metaphor for this situation.

Yea. The internet on our phones is where it went too far.

Depends on your definition of "the world". People were definitely better. The world was much less efficient, especially in business.

False
Individuals had access to way less information. Population was generally pretty ignorant
They still are but I’m much smarter for it

I lean with this being true but then I think about how the left would have absolute control over everything because there would be no way to fact check their asses.

Certainly better before smartphones and mobile broadband internet.
Life has gotten much more complicated with the advent of these things which in theory should have made things much more simple.

It was absolutely better before the internet. People who disagree with that, I think are most likely the types who believe that every conspiracy they read online is true, and thus believe that the internet has unlocked our path to "enlightenment". That, or they just don't know anything about anything, and are blissfully ignorant.
But the truth is that it has rotted society. It has discouraged people from engaging with others, especially in a manner that is remotely respectful, and for some, it has discouraged them from even going outside.
It has given people who know nothing the power to convince others that they know everything, simply by the way people have been conditioned to believe that millions of followers equals credibility. It has utterly warped the way people interpret reality, because they don't deal in reality, but fantasy.
There are things that the internet can be, and is, used for good. That is the case with a lot of things that are a net negative. Unfortunately, human nature made it inevitable that it would lead to far more bad than good.

Like the world was better before the gun. Or automobile. Or Humanity. Power is as power does. And just like with AI, we’ll have to go for it because of the good it can do. AI will inform us of that.

It's been a net negative. The internet spawned social media and disinformation. On the other hand it's provided quick, accurate information (when used properly), in regard to weather, learning tools, etc.
Unfortunately the bad outweighs the good and it can't be stopped at this point.
AI scares the f***k out of me because most that have and program that tech are socialists and run to the beat of their own "Symphony of Destruction".

I realize we're all just answering a question with our own opinions here: But I'm curious... How do we say that the internet was better before "stupid people" got access to it, when they never would have had access if it had never been invented? Because that access was always inevitable. We're not debating the intentions of the creators of the internet, but the effects of it. And clearly, by any measure, the world is much worse off with the ease of access to disinformation, free porn, screen addiction, inflated egos because "look, I have my own show!" (podcasts) predators interacting with kids in a way they never could before, with the greatest of ease.
Someone in here tried to make the comparison to the invention of cars, by suggesting you could say the world was a better place before them, and so we just have to deal with it. Well, I don't think that's a very good comparison. With cars, there is a risk of an accident, sure. We live in a fast paced world that has many more people in it than there were 120 years ago. But that's different from cultural rot, where the soul of our country, and world, has been heavily damaged by the internet. Death is inevitable, by whatever means, and whatever time. But how we live while we're here, collectively, is what determines whether the world is better or worse.
This world needs Jesus, but the internet has become the "god" in a lot of people's lives.

100% better before. 9-11 was another major reason things now suck.

We have the power to learn nearly anything we want. The brain rot that’s occurred is a reflection of the users interests rather than a system flaw.
Much like God creating the world and granting us free will, a controlled internet beyond preventing actual crime is inherently flawed as well and comes with its own set of problems.
