Millennial male soy consumption is about to result in much higher transport costs, directly biting consumers in the poop chute.
quote:

Throughout the past decade, the trucking industry has struggled with a shortage of truck drivers. The driver shortage affects the entire economy, as over 68% of all freight is moved on U.S. highways. And with the shortage increasing driver pay, it can have a significant impact on supplier costs and therefore consumer pricing. It can also increase shipping delays and shortage at stores.

As the nation faces a historically low level of unemployment, trucking companies are doing what economists have said firms need to do to attract and retain workers: They’re hiking pay significantly, offering bonuses and even recruiting people they previously wouldn’t have considered.

But it’s not working. The industry reports a growing labor shortage — 63,000 open positions this year, a number expected to more than double in coming years — that could have wide-ranging impacts on the U.S. economy.

Pretty soon they won't need as many truck drivers anyway. Some companies are already using driverless trucks in Germany.

Why join a profession that literally won’t exist for humans in like 5-10 years

Already have a great one. We are blasted every day and every hour with the wails of millenials complaining about no economic opportunity. Here's one.

You definitely need high levels of testosterone to sit behind the wheel of a truck all day. Definitely.

And if they continue to raise wages, they will become more competitive.

This is a non story.

If you're looking to get it while the going is good, it could be worse. Just know what you're up against in the future.

Exactly. Even if it disappears in a decade or 2, get in now and save up some money and then move on to a different in-demand job when this one becomes redundant.

This is like saying "why enter a high profit industry now when profit rates will be driven way down through competition in coming years?"

Especially when the barriers to entry are pretty damn low - getting a CDL isn't exactly the same as earning a bachelor's degree.

It’s only high profit if you own your own truck.

Orherwise it isn’t exactly competitive considering all the other things you have to deal with

I hear Truckers are making damn good money. Definitely be a career worth looking into for people that are bouncing around from job to job.

It's like anywhere from 70,000 to 85,000.

Far less. That’s the beautiful thing about low supply and high demand...innovation!!

For someone who is capable and skilled in other realms, sure. But I would think that for a lot of underskilled folks, truck driving might be their best bet, especially with the labor shortages driving wages up.

Truck drivers was once almost a romantic notion ( smokey and the bandit etc) freedom on the roads and good pay but now its yearly DOT certifications, drug screens, monitored CPAP usage, strict drivers logs that tell you when you need a break regardless if you are tired or not and then to go with it your lucky to make 50G a year only to be eventually phased out, why bother?

60k for an "opportunity" that almost certainly won't last long enough for most 9f them to make a career out of it?

you'd have to be a sucker or desperate

I know 20 years ago Wal Mart drivers were making 80ish. I assume it's better now. That's some good cheese for a CDL.
