Thune says ‘no consensus’ on daylight savings time.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday there is no “consensus” yet on advancing a bill establishing permanent daylight saving time even as President Donald Trump ramps up pressure on Republicans to pass it.
Thune (R-S.D.) addressed the matter in a Monday interview after Trump used his Truth Social account multiple times over the weekend to rail against the legislation, known as the Sunshine Protection Act — going so far as to post the personal cellphone number of one of its GOP opponents, Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

“The president feels strongly on it like he does a lot of issues,” he said. “It’s something we’re having conversations about but there’s no clear path forward or consensus on it yet.”
While Trump singled out Cotton for scrutiny, Thune made clear the opposition to the permanent daylight saving time proposal — which would lead to very late winter sunrises in some parts of the country — ran deeper than one senator.
Cotton has publicly voiced opposition to the proposal for year, citing, among other things, the fact that children in his state would be going to school in the dark for part of the year.
Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) voiced similar objections Monday to reporters in the Capitol, saying he was mindful of “safety concerns in the more northern and rural states where children get on the school bus in very early hours.”
Thune, who spoke during a campaign swing in Minnesota with GOP Senate nominee Michele Tafoya, has himself opposed previous daylight saving bills. He said Monday that “a lot of it depends on where you are in the country” and that “your geography probably has as much to do with your position on that as anything.”
Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who has aligned himself closely with Trump, is among the lawmakers who have been pushing to get the bill through the Senate. He recently told POLITICO, “I’m going to make sure it gets passed this year.”

Good. It’s terrible legislation.

Good, I hate this idea.

I don’t know why anyone supports it.
If we have to choose one (we don’t—this “problem” is entirely blown out of proportion) standard time is the choice.

I have an idea: you hold 2 elections. Put it on the national election ballot:
1. Continue with time changes or eliminate them.
2. If time changes are eliminated, would you prefer permanent standard time or permanent dst?
Put both of these on the national ballot with Presidential election or midterms and let the people decide.

If we have to choose one, I would prefer DST. However, if I was told Standard time was going to be the decision, I would still prefer that over continuing to change clocks twice per year.

Because they'd prefer the longer period of daylight being after noon rather than prior. Not really a difficult concept to understand.

What is a good argument to keep DST? I really don't go off of time. When it's too dark, I stay inside or go inside.

The debate between DST vs Standard comes down to this:
Do you want more sunlight before work/school or after? Personally, I am far more likely to be exercising, socializing, and doing chores outdoors after work vs before. Therefore, DST is preferable. When it gets dark, I don’t want to be walking around the streets of Baton Rouge alone.

To show increased racial sensitivity shouldn't we reset it to colored people time?

There are pros and cons to all 3 options
Keeping permanent daylight savings time
Keeping permanent standard Time
Trying to adjust the clock seasonally
And in situations like this people just complain. Since there are legitimate pros and cons to all three you'll never get consensus.
No matter which one you pick people will look at the cons and bitch that you should have picked something else.
Simply put I think that trying to change the clock seasonally isn't worth the hassle and I'm totally fine with either of the other permanent options

Does Thune think the same about the Save Act?

I feel like this is an easily dismissed argument so obviously there is another reason or lobby.
With holiday breaks, we're talking about a total of about 30-40 school days where kids have about 30 minutes longer of darkness. Schools are welcome to adjust their schedule as well.
But on the other end, kids coming home from post school activities or aftercare etc. won't be coming home during rush hour in the dark.

I'd love one set time for 365 days but I also understand how it makes an extreme difference in Wisconsin compared to Louisiana. Northern states are impacted much greater than southern.

Back in 2014 I had a class and conference in New Orleans. I got up at 3AM every morning and ran from the Sheraton down to the river and ran from the cruise ship launch all the way to the other end of the river walk and back up to the Sheraton. It was dark the entire time.
I feel like regardless of light or dark, people will adapt

This bill is dumb.
Also, Thune couldn't get consensus on water being wet. He is a horrible conservative leader.

It’s funny because it’s literally ONE THING the Republicans could do. But they can’t even do that. One single thing.
This loser arse fricking party.
