Throwback Thursday: How bad was the John McCain 2008 campaign?
Posted on 7/2/26 at 12:16 pm
Posted on 7/2/26 at 12:16 pm
Let’s review:
- His campaign was run by now open Democrats
-He ran on a pro-war / “surge” campaign in the midst of a horribly unpopular war
-He plucked a small state governor out of obscurity that was in no way prepared for the spotlight outside of an initial speech.
- He was MIA during the height of the financial crash
Was McCain just a uniparty sacrifice to get Hillary or Obama in?

“The fundamentals of the economy are strong”
-McCain during the crash
-McCain during the crash

And her pick likely was responsible for getting him more votes than some generic beltway drone type pick would have helped garner.
The real question is, what campaign was more a pointless charade, McCain's or Romney's?

You can convince me he was trying to lose by August 2008

Oh, I don’t blame her as much as McCain and his two liberal advisors.

Bad. he was in over his head but Republicans were afflicted with the "My Turn" disorder that gave us Mitt, McCain, and Doyle.

Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if his "liberal advisors" played a hand in the media torpedoing her after that initial speech, when they realized 'Oh, shite, this dumb hick broad might actually be resonating with grass-roots voters!'

Still better than Biden’s 2020 in every way, other than it resulting in over 81 million votes.

Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.: that is the full name of the junior Senator from Illinois — neither a contrivance nor, at face value, a slur.
But John McCain couldn’t apologize quickly enough after Bill Cunningham, a conservative talk radio host, warmed up a Cincinnati rally with a few loaded references to “Barack Hussein Obama.”
Asked afterwards if it was appropriate to use the Senator’s middle name, McCain said, “No, it is not. Any comment that is disparaging of either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama is totally inappropriate.”
LINK McCain don’t use Barry’s middle name

One of the bigger issues I recall him focusing on was "Earmarks" within bills.
That tells you how boring and designed to fail his campaign was. As if people are gonna be at home talking about earmarks after a debate.
Trump actually introduced the ability to address topics in a funny and snarky way on a debate stage....obviously something the GOPe despises. They would rather keep trotting out the McCains and Jeb! and taking a noble pounding from Hillary, Obama....

I vaguely remember “pork” being one of his planks as if that was ever going to capture the population’s attention.

I think he was a cranky, arrogant, entitled old man that truly believed it was "his turn," and he always came off as annoyed that the entire political right didn't just file in behind him.
He fundamentally misread the electorate with respect to the war, and then as someone else said he played the financial crisis poorly.
ETA: I do not think he was some kind of dem or uniparty shill.

It's so sad that he was the best we could come up with.

Wallace 100% hoped she’d get damaged by that Couric interview.
On a similar note, Romney had some momentum after the first debate and then completely went to ground for the remaining months. He wanted no part of attempting to beat Obama.

quote:Without question. McCain couldn't get a decent sized audience anywhere on the campaign trail unless Palin was on stage with him. But given the economy, the GOP was not going to win in 2008. By comparison, Romney's campaign was far more poorly run.
And her pick likely was responsible for getting him more votes

Romney had two big things going for him: (1) economic recovery had been painfully slow and (2) the lead up and passage of Obamacare was a pure debacle. Had no momentum until the first debate where he caught Obama with his pants down. Then to add to this, he picks the most boring guy in DC to be his running mate.

I lean this way as well. That doesn't mean I think McCain is any less of a shite stain.

He ended up being a literal communist.
