“There are good people on both sides”

Can someone explain to me what is wrong with that comment?
I am totally against the removal of statues and monuments.
I’m not a nazi, or skinhead, or white supremecist, etc.
I like to think I’m a good person.
I know people that agree that statues should come down.
They are good people. (Misguided and wrong, but good people)
Then you have scumbags on both sides.
What am I missing?

It does not fit the narrative of the “with us or against us” mentality that our political arena/society has become.

Libertarians and Republicans agree with that statement. People on the left generally believe we are all racist nazis hell bent on oppressing them. Victimhood is political capital to them.

I'm trying to think of a good Communist. Can't come with one just yet.

I have worked with plenty of people that I respected that I disagreed with politically because they were good at their job or had a talent that I didn't.
Now, would I want to hang out with them? Probably not.

There's really nobody good on the modern left today. Not this left that supports open borders, reparations, illegals voting, post-birth abortions, transgenders in the bathroom with children, banning all airplanes and automobiles, etc.
Those are all bad people.
Those are all bad people.

Nothing. It’s just the scumbags tend to care a lot more and be much more vocal and aggressive

The both sides at the time in question happened to include neo- Nazis. I’m not inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt as “good people”

it's an entirely misconstrued statement.
ETA: i'm not defending Trump in a sense from the stupid stuff he says. he gives people plenty of ammo and deserves a lot of his pushback.
He could have paraphrased the entire above with:
"Neo-nazism and white supremacy have no place in today's world. I have for years and will continue to condemn those parties. That being said, the removal of historical statues is more nuanced for some than just being a nazi or white supremacist. Not wanting to remove a piece of history, no matter how painful, does not make you either of those vile things. There were people there that were protesting the washing of history along with the bad actors. There were people protesting those protestors who showed up with bats, helmets, and masks. There were people that showed up to the protest with nothing more than a sign. Saying that everybody there showed up with hate in their heart would be painting with a broad brush and I can't speak for everybody's heart, but i can condemn violence that came from it."
i just said the same thing without being as easily misquotable. Trump gives the left easy ammo too often.
quote:
REPORTER: You said there was hatred and violence on both sides?
TRUMP: I do think there is blame – yes, I think there is blame on both sides. You look at, you look at both sides. I think there’s blame on both sides, and I have no doubt about it, and you don't have any doubt about it either. And, and, and, and if you reported it accurately, you would say.
REPORTER: The neo-Nazis started this thing. They showed up in Charlottesville.
TRUMP: Excuse me, they didn't put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me. I saw the same pictures as you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down, of to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.
REPORTER: George Washington and Robert E. Lee are not the same.
TRUMP: Oh no, George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down – excuse me. Are we going to take down, are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? You like him? Okay, good. Are we going to take down his statue? He was a major slave owner. Are we going to take down his statue? You know what? It’s fine, you’re changing history, you’re changing culture, and you had people – and I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally – but you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists, okay? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats – you had a lot of bad people in the other group too.

The lefts main talking point, another one is that an old white guy punched a black protester at a rally. They bring it up every time someone asks, " how is Trump a racist". They're good people on both sides, many people don't want to see historical monuments removed. The other issue about one guy throwing a punch that makes Trump a racist is sad. The left plays the part perfectly and the media keeps pushing the BS.

You’re not missing anything. There are reasonable people of all political stripes, just like there are clowns of all political stripes.
One of the problems we have in our discourse is so many times you see both sides holding up the worst of the other side and screaming “see how terrible they are?!?”
It needs to stop and it starts with reasonable people policing their own.

When Trump made this quote he was clearly talking about the pro removal and anti removal crowd.
The media and left spun it to make him seem like he was talking about the neo nazis/white supremacists vs. the "anti-racist" left.
