There are currently only 5 countries with communist governments.

China
N Korea
Vietnam
Laos
Cuba
Soon there will be only 4. The 4 remaining will be homogeneous societies. Lack of diversity is their super power.
Only a hand full of countries claim to be socialist.
They are shite countries like Nicaragua, Bolivia, India, Portugal.
Knowing communism has failed every time it has been tried except for a few primitive Asian countries, why is the American left pushing such failed nonsense?

It'll work this time. Trust me, bro. It's just no one has done it correctly.

“They just never did it correctly.”

Can the PRC even be considered Communist at this point? (An honest question that’ll probably be downvoted for some reason). It seems like it’s moved to a fascist conception of harnessing private or semiprivate enterprise to magnify state power.

Give us time
we're getting there
we're getting there

Yea. China is more of an authoritarian capitalist system than communism.
Nobody is fleeing to communism. But people sure flee from it.
Yet posters like SFP, Owlfan, Cubbies, and Powerman will claim they know how to do it right this time.

China and Vietnam are also essentially communist on paper but functionally operate within the capitalist system just with heightened regulation and state level influence on corporations (state owned or partly owned businesses).

Might add Nicaragua ……although they aren’t nearly as dysfunctional as Cuba.

Is China really a communist country?
Posted on 5/25/26 at 5:23 pm to Diego Ricardo
Exactly.
I've been visiting Vietnam regularly since 1998. Was just there in December.
The growth of Ho Chi Minh City has been absolutely phenomenal. Fastest growing city I've ever seen although Shanghai is up there.
HCMC is the boom city of SE Asia. Pretty impressive for communism.

20th century communism was doomed when the German Revolution failed for the KPD and left an underdeveloped Russian state then a similarly underdeveloped China to carry the mantle for the communist way.
Communism, by their own 19th/20th century thinker’s admission, needed to be an international revolution to “seize the means of production” for the working class. Communism within a country was cope from Russian communists left to figure out what to do when they basically needed to become capitalist which Russia wasn’t really fully there when they overthrew the Czarist regime. This is why you see Lenin pivot to the New Economic Program (essentially capital on guardrails) before his brain exploded from the contradictions he was trying to resolve.
China making a deal with the US after getting uncomfortable with Russian dominance over international communism is why they were able to make the capital pivot cleaner than Russia. They are an isolationist/insular people. We offered them the opportunity to be as socially authoritarian and state capitalist as they desired as long as they’d buy our newly minted fiat currency’s treasury notes.

Cali and NYC are bigger than Cuba. I woukd say they count.

Fun fact: no country has ever achieved true "communism" as defined by Karl Marx.
China is heavily state-controlled but there's a huge private sector. China, Laos and Vietnam all embrace capitalism but are one-party states.

It’s not just Communism. Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried. Socialism is evil as well.

China and Vietnam are communist in name only but not practice as far as the economy goes
I don’t know shite about Laos
North Korea is probably the only true communist nation besides Cuba on that list

I thoroughly enjoyed my recent trip to Portugal. Maybe I didn't go to any of the shitty areas.
I'm interested in what made you view Portugal so harshly when you visited.
