The US remains a net IMPORTER of CRUDE OIL

As of the week ending June 5, 2026, for just crude oil, the US importers 1 million barrels more per day than it exports.
LINK
Will you clueless phuckers STFU about you damn cheap arse gasoline being to expensive?
The US also exports a lot of gasoline to people willing to pay more than you broke/cheap arse idiots complaining.

We wouldn’t be if we’d just build some a refineries capable of processing our own oil.
ETA: for those who are unaware, the only reason the US imports oil is because the oil from US wells is light sweet crude, while all of our refineries are designed to refine the heavier grades of crude oil, which come from other countries.
Now ask yourself why we’re not building refineries capable of processing own damn oil.

Meh, we do have refineries producing the products which are most profitable. It costs more money to refine extra light "crude oil" than heavy crude oil. It takes more energy to heat for the crude unit and has to be refined at a higher temperature due all of the light ends.
Gasoline is one of the least profitable per barrel products if not a net loss for refiners.

The question remains
Why hasn’t trump made us energy independent?

He explained it. We export refined products and we probably consume more gasoline than any other country. Oil refiners probably have determined they can import a barrel and export refined products at heap big profit.

Less than 30% of US refineries are really set up to refine our own oil.

How long do you think it takes to build a refinery? Like even one?

It takes a long time but You can’t build a refinery if you don’t even start .
Why hasn’t trump made us energy independent!?

Have you considered asking oil refiners? Trump doesn't plan refineries, the refiners do. Or do you want a government owned oil refinery?

Forget building refineries, how long do you think it takes to even start building them?

Because it’s impossible to do in the amount of time he has been, or will be, in office?

President Trump himself has claimed several times that the U.S. became energy independent under his administration. However, that term was basically defined as exporting more total petroleum product than we imported. And using that definition, we were “energy independent” under the Potato administration as well.

Well citizen k, your picking a subset line off the import/export balance is pretty serious misinformation. The total oil/oil products balance line tells a completely different story. You have even described in other posts how Venezuela swaps naphtha for crude blend stock . Net crude/products shows the US to be a major net exporter

People that have not worked in the industry don’t understand this. Why build a less profitable refinery that runs the easy stuff when you can have a cost advantage by building a refinery with the metallurgy and equipment to run cheap, sour, viscous crude from foreign countries? The uplift is everything on a product where the profit can be pennies per gallon.
