So what? If I do well in life and want to invest heavily in my children's success, I should be able to do that without being shamed by a bunch of useless liberal arts majors whose greatest burden in life is waiting tables.

Bingo. Why leave wealth in the hands of the individuals who created it... people who invest and create jobs? Why do that when you can have the government confiscate and steal 90% of it?

"tax the rich" is nothing but a smoke screen. the real issue is why is the government spending so much money.

Leftists are ignorant of economics as well as science, both heat and money have properties of quantity and quality and useful work is performed only when both metrics are present.

I'm not disagreeing but the statement is still false.

A flat tax is a fair tax. Everyone pays the same "Fair share"

It’s a false story. It should already go away.

many "millionaires" are just people with a decent 401k and own a house being a millionaire isn't what it used to be

You’re right.

But it also highlights how much capitalism and the market economy has raised a lot of boats.

Put money in your 401k. Let your house appreciate. And you become a millionaire almost by accident.

What a country.

Only an extremely small percentage of the population is capable of producing wealth. It seems reasonable that the concentration of wealth would be concentrated in this group. They also know how to leverage it for more production.

--------------------------------------------------
Most of my career was engineering support of production lines. I interfaced with the lowest level assembly line person (many were hard working and fairly bright), to the R&D 'braniacs' and top level managers and marketing/sales people.

Everyone was needed to function. The 'braniac' was not going to sit on an assembly line (and it would waste their talents). No group could do the other groups job. If you took the companies funds, and divided it up, the assembly line people couldn't create wealth with it - they didn't have the knowledge, often not the capability or motivation. We *need* to let the elite *be* elite, or we all lose.

The truth is that Democrats use this overheated language because they cannot persuade voters on the issues. They cannot defend open borders, massive spending, inflationary policies, attacks on American energy or their increasingly radical social agenda.

We had a 72% tax braket until the 1970s then we destroyed the tax system. Has our society improved or devolved since the 1970s? We were arguably a greatest country in 1970 than we are now.

You could also deduct everything back then. The effective rate of the too 1% in the 70s was lower than it is today.

Which policy eliminated wealth, drove the rich away, or left nobody to fund the country?

Ask California and New York about that.

Regardless, I would love to know what percentage of the total revenues you think the top 1% should contribute?

“Ask California and New York” ain’t evidence bubba. The maga slogan is that taxing the wealthy makes them disappear and leaves nobody to fund the country. Establish that proposition. What share the top 1% should contribute is a separate question, and changing the subject does not mend the first one. It just tells the folks watching from the porch you couldn’t keep that horse under you.

So “who pays when the rich are gone?” answers a position nobody took.
Gavin Newsom and Kathy Hochul are certainly asking the question “who pays when the rich are gone?”

"The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money" is a famous quote by former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

When she said it, UK GDP per capita was 86% that of the US.

Four decades of leftward drift and redistribution later, and the UK GDP per capita is 65% that of the US.

If the UK was a state, it would now be our poorest per capita. In 1980, it would have been middle of the pack, 25th or so.

But of course, prior to Trump, the US was toying with its own redistribution ideas.

By comparison, the UK's neighbor, Ireland, moved the opposite direction over the four decade span. It drifted right, with far more pro-business and wealth-friendly policy. In GDP per capita terms it was about 60% the UK during Thatcher's time. It is now ~200% of the UK.
