Fund raising, it took some time to get that many donations to build it.

Is this a “re-enactment”group or are these active military? If I’m not mistaken, the army does still maintain mounted cavalry for ceremonial/historical purposes.

The Rough Riders were a Volunteer Calvary unit in the Spanish American War. Ironically, with not enough horses, they primarily fought as an infantry unit. There were a few prominent New Orleanians who joined up with the 1st USVC and fought with Teddy. When He came to NOLA in 1905, he dined with a few of that group at the Pickwick Club.

They are a reenactor group...still a nice touch.

Re-enactment. There is still 4 mounted units (5th SFG aside) but they are all ceremonial.
The 5th group fought mounted in Afghanistan in the war made famous by the movie 12 Strong. I’ve met one of them because our sons serve together. He has no prior horseback knowledge but learned quick.

I would love to have been there to witness it in person. TR was one of the great ones.

Seems I remember during high school one of the last living Spanish American war vets gave an interview. Bitching that the “charge up San Juan Hill” was largely a myth. He said the Rough Riders walked up San Juan Hill with little resistance.

Teddy Roosevelt was such an interesting man and tough as nails.

It's sad that it took this long for a great president to have one, and yet Obama has one...albeit looking like a trash can.

Useless trivia time:
The old Canadian Football League Ottawa Rough Riders were directly named in tribute to Roosevelt and his regiment.

People forget the presidential library act of 1986 requires that the foundations that run them have a pretty large endowment. Presidential libraries on that scale we think about just was not a thing until mid 20th century.

LINK I was in San Antonio 2 weeks ago. Visited the famous menger hotel bar where teddy recruited his rough riders. It is across street from alamo. There is a large statue there of teddy on horseback. Worth a visit.
