Now this is a curve I’d like to see flattened.

How many did either have the authority to close?

All of them considering it's Congress.

Would being president of one party help you get all of them on your side? Yeah if you are a democrat. Neither Paul has ever shown to rally the entire Republican base. So, the answer is as president he'd still need Congress.

That's a graph of which party held the White House, but the White House doesn't dictate budgets. All spending originates in the House.

That said, a President can have influence over budgets (especially if their party also controls the House). When you look at it in that fuller context you'll see that while there is room for both parties to point fingers at each other, they are both to blame and that finger-pointing is nothing but a distraction to keep people from focusing on them both at the same time.

Here's an example:
Since 1970 the Democrats have controlled the House for 38 years while the Republicans have controlled it for only 18.

Meanwhile, Democrat controlled Houses have approved ~$19.5T in deficit spending while the GOP has presided over ~$14T.

When you break that down, Democrats average around $526B in deficit spending per year while the GOP averages $777B.

So Democrats have created more debt just by holding the House longer, but the GOP averages more deficit spending per year over the period.

It also depends on where you put your time limit. Going back to FY 2000, the Dems have held the House 1/2 as long as the GOP but have presided over about 2x the amount of deficit spending.

All of this is to just reinforce the point that it's both parties and trying to break it down to making a single party accountable is a waste of time.

Doing so is political suicide.

Therefore, debt will never be fixed.

sure it will. It's just that you're going to HATE the fix.

All that.

Why try to fix something (and get kicked out of office) when you kids can just inherit the problem!!!

"This is because for California to get rescued would be a big cost to red states, & I think it creates in the years ahead a lot of tension."

"California's functional bankruptcy is a major risk to the country. & I think we need to figure out what we can change to fix it."

How we got here:
"California has a public pension system, & that public pension system retirees have paid into it & they get some benefits out, & the amount that they're owed back out is somewhere between $250 billion - $1 trillion dollars more than has been paid in.

$250 billion to $1 trillion short.

If it was the federal government, it would be like, okay, we'll just print more money. California doesn't have the ability to print money, so California has to pay this out, and you can't restructure retirement benefits.

There is a Supreme Court case in California that said that once an employee has been offered retirement benefits, even if they're currently an employee, you can never restructure their retirement benefits.

It has to stay forever, and the state cannot declare bankruptcy. There's no way for the state to functionally declare bankruptcy. There's no law to allow it. No state has ever declared bankruptcy, and the retirement benefits sit senior to the bonds in California.

So you have to pay out the retirement benefits before you pay out all the bond holders that have loaned California the money that they use to run all their programs and services."

... then all the red states will say, we're not paying for the bailout, and it would cause a lot of conflict in America. So I don't think people realize how big of a problem this is and what it's gonna drive in the years ahead. So that's my hot take. That's why I'm really worried about California."

Going to war is the get out of budget criticism card. "well we know we were 40 trillion in debt but then we were at war so we couldn't cut spending"

Congress controls the purse. None of them are bothered about paying down the debt or reducing spending

No, they aren't... but we the people are the ones that cast votes and put them in the position of power. We the people need to elect better congressional representation.

I tell my kids that there are two types of political liars.

1) moderate democrats during the election

2) fiscal Republicans during the election

Don't make a voting decision on either.

Trump spent more in 4 years than Obama did in 8

No wonder he’s a fan of bankruptcy laws and protections.
