It’s not 60k that would die. If 350 million get it and assuming only 1% mortality that is 3.5 million people. Is OP willing to sacrifice 3.5 million Americans?

You just theorized more than 100% of Americans would get the virus. Which is as likely as 80%, I guess.

Italy has gone from near 0 to over 41K cases in 18 days with the vast majority of cases in the Lombardy region consisting of ~ 10 Million.

4000 dead and 2K currently critical (demanding an ICU and ventilator). Only 5K cleared leaving 35 thousand either going north or south from a prognosis perspective.

With ~ 3 million in the St Louis Metro area, if unchecked, your ICU beds will be taken up in matter of a week or so and the moral dilemma of who gets to live and who gets to die begins to play out.

Now, go throw yourself a big party with all of your like minded moronic friends with you.

Social distancing is great. Problem I have is I live in north Louisiana and c.o.p.d., 63 y.o. we were fine up here until the people from south Louisiana came up and have brought the shite with them. I dont want to die quite yet. Hotels are filling up. Just like when hurricane comes. I dont blame them. I'd get the hell out too.

Im not sure you understand. The issue is not the death rate WITH the mitigations. The issue is what will happen if we don't take these steps you are complaining about.

The number you need to look at is the percent of people who require intensive care to survive and recover. That number is astronomical.

What is that number?

How many deaths will there be in Italy? If you were to apply that the US population, how many deaths will that be?

You do understand that the sheltering in place is not theorized to decrease the number of infections, right? It’s just spreading them out.

This is what a LOT of people are not getting, and to be fair the government/doctors/leaders advocating for extreme social distancing have not been clear on it either, and I think we know why. In 2 more weeks, when all the Facebook moms finally learn that locking themselves inside for the past 2 weeks hasn’t made this thing go away, and it in fact has made sure it’ll be around longer, everyone is going to stop doing it.

So, you're assuming a nearly 100% contagion rate?

There may be this myth, but ok. What % of otherwise healthy cv19 infected people under are in ICUs?

At this point maybe we would be better off if we just had everybody get it and deal with the half a percent dying. I know that is 1.7M people. Either have a million plus people die or have a million plus people die and wreck the economy forever.

At this point I am not 100% kidding. If it is so contagious and dangerous and unstoppable just get it over with.

The mortality rate is only that low because everyone can get care.

What is "that low"? what is the "not that low"?

We don't even have anything remotely close to adequate testing, especially of recovered and low-to-no-symptomatic positives, to say "that low." it's almost certainly lower.

And we need morbidity numbers to begin to make the sort of analysis to draw anything like your conclusion.

I appreciate you being willing to put numbers out there. The others in this thread aren't willing and instead just want to say "the numbers are out there".

Unfortunately, your post is way off the mark. It's pretty clear that emotion is driving your opinion vs. the numbers. It makes me wonder if everyone on your side of the aisle is doing the same thing.

If the health care system crumbles here like in Italy, it is going to be a similar hell that is much harder to escape from.

I am not in the shut it down for months crowd either, I get that it isn't sustainable but you need to give people time to be ready and to slow things down for now.
