re: The Panama Canal is running dry. That's the U.S.'s fault and the U.S.'s problem

No good. Saltwater is a bitch to everything but saltwater life

couldn't they just design it not to use fresh water
Setting aside the astronomical amount of sea water you’d have to use, can you imagine the environmental reaction to flooding huge areas of central Panama with salt water?

Once again this sounds like a Panama problem. We turned over a functioning canal system.

Once again this is the chinese trying to get out in front and blame the US so they don't have to pony up any money.

A sea-level canal is way overdue!

Well, let’s use our minds

Given that both terminals are inherently at sea level, would the need for locks not indicate that the canal has to traverse a much higher elevation in the middle to get from coast to coast?
Using our minds means we understand how incredibly overstated global warming is in the first place. That’s the point I was trying to make in my own sarcastic way.

If anything the locks in the canal are allowing less water to go into the oceans while this drought continues. If they were not in place the water would have escaped already

Thought ocean levels were rising due to the climatic change???

Infant- the canal has connections to 2 different oceans. Would that help ?

So there is no way to back fill the void ? I here there is actual evidence of pumps that work doing something similar
Posted on 9/18/23 at 12:28 pm to djmed
So if you have two locks of different water levels, wouldn’t the water in the higher lock be pumped to the lower one? And don’t you have an ocean on both ends?
Why the hell do you need more water?

What is it?
I refer to the 6th grade as "my senior year" and still thought of the fricking oceans of water that the Panama Canal is used to connect. I'll go out on a limb and say you are college educated.

The lake forms the center of the canal, and is something like 100 feet or more above sea level. That’s why where are locks at both ends. Ships ascend through the locks, traverse the lake, and descend on the other side.
No, pumping that amount of sea water into the peninsula isn’t feasible or sustainable.

I know nothing about dams... but
Is the water level not the same for both oceans? I assume sea level is the same everywhere with the exception of tidal changes. Why does there need to be dams and not just a channel that allows the water to flow between the two locations?
(Again I know zip about dams... its just a question)

Freshwater is much less corrosive on the equipment needed to run the canal. However, the real reasons are because it’s easier to bring water downhill from a lake 100ft above sea level than pump the ocean uphill, and that the canal is also used for agriculture irrigation.

No. It still has to climb over significant terrain.
“Just make the whole thing sea level” is a really fricking dumb assessment.
