Ok. What specific numbers would you suggest for someone wanting to buy an average home in the city of Atlanta while maintaining financial security for a family of four?

First thing you need to do is move out of Atlanta.

we're talking about needing to be in the top 5% of earners just to afford what was once considered a middle-class lifestyle.

When the crap hits the fan what are you going to do to survive in Atlanta?
You may or many not be able to get away using your car, then what?

My fists are designated weapons similar to Nic Cage in Con Air.

We bought our house and 54 acres in 2011 for 280K. Bought the 40 acres that joined us for 120 a couple years later. We've invested a total of 400K. Land is worth about a million and house 400K today.
Doesn't this illustrate the problem?? Your property increased in value 350% over that timeframe. Your house alone increased by 40%+. And you're already driving 67 miles, it's going to be hard to go even further out.
If you know any jobs that pay 3x what they did a decade ago let me know.
Edit: and your land went up almost 10x in 14 years. The people who can do that ON PURPOSE will never worry about affording a thing in any economy, ever.

I'm also 48, and this is the 5th house I have owned. How old are you? I had nothing for a long time

He was talking about childcare, so I am guessing he has two young kids and is younger than 32.

It's actually conservatives that have most of the zoning laws in place. You have to have enough land, you can't build this high, you can't build this wide, it has to be all single family homes, there needs to be this many acres, there has to be enough room for at least six bedrooms, etc, etc, etc.
Urban sprawl. If you want to make it work you're going to have to go back to how post-war homes were all the same and literally packed together. That's supposed to be when America was great so let's get back to it.

These comments seem to imply the US should not have a middle class
Median = middle, according to the "save up" comments the middle class of this nation should drive a shithole, eat cabbage for every meal, and cram a nuclear family into a small house in a shitty neighborhood OR live 70 miles from where they work
To me, that sounds more like lower class if not poverty

I do have two young kids. Older than 32 though. Took me a while to get to where we could afford to have kids.

So you’re limiting your argument to Atlanta. Makes sense. What’s true for Atlanta is obviously true for the rest of America.
