Republicans control the House and Senate and Presidency.
Today, in this CR fight, they only control one of those. Granted, in this CR fight, they control the most important one.
quote:As I understand it the R's that voted no, at least the Freedom Caucus voting no members, wanted spending cuts in exchange for a debt ceiling increase to be done via reconciliation later.
All they have to do is cut spending. All this does is force them to make deals with Dems in the summer.
And not 1:1 either. Some cuts ($110 bbn?) to raise the debt ceiling $5 trillion (way too much) so Trumps hands aren't tied in the first months of his presidency.
If Johnson can't put that on paper shame on him because that means he hasn't been looking. The freedom caucus has decided to draw the line in the sand. BUT, because their only real demand, as conservatives, is to start structuring in the spending cuts, which aligns with Trumps overall agenda and DOGE's mission, they aren't asking for anything the voters didn't sign off on.
There's only really two options to achieve it:
(a) Quit doing stupid arse CRs and do reconciliation
(b) shut it down, wait for the new Congress, and try again. If it doesn't work, go back to (a)

Not yet. And they won’t if TeamTrump keeps undercutting their allies that are ostensibly trying to implement the policies he ran on.
You're missing the point. That's why this was a 2 year resolution. Would last through the entire next House term and keep us out of having to deal with his stupid nonsense every few months.

Trump laying out the reality of the situation.
Glad to see him say "pass it now or shut it down." That's exactly the stance he should be taking.

But politics is not business. And when you try to run the country like a business, you get things like this.
Not only is politics not business but government is not business. Sorry, but government is not in the business of making money, it's purpose is to provide for the general welfare of its citizens. I can assure you, money is not made doing that, however, we don't need to lose our arse on it too.
R's are going to eat a major L on this and Trump and the unelected Elon are going to get blasted. Those evil people are trying to take grandma's social security check right before Christmas.
The headlines write themselves.

quote:Yes. That's why Trump wants it... needs it. In his mind that handicap has primacy as we sit here today. The only way he gets it is "a" CR before he's in office and the house majority becomes even slimmer. It is pure poltics. He probably doesn't want a CR either. But if it means having what he calls a "guillotine" removed he'll deal with the cuts later.

All the no voters are saying, at this point in time, is that starting cutting spending now has primacy and that the debt ceiling will be a problem for later (possibly moot) if they get enough cuts now (in CR) and reconciliation later.
The only way they both get their in-the-moment primary concern addressed, handcuffs of debt ceiling (Trump) and spending cuts (no voters) is reconciliation now, not later. But Johnson spent weeks negotiating that monstrosity, not working towards that.
Hence- shut it down and do reconciliation as soon as they return. Which neither side (Trump and "no voters") gets their concern addressed WHEN they want it addressed, but they just both might get it later.

Speaking of Norman, this is what he said
LINK
Leaving House Freedom Caucus tonight, Ralph Norman tells me a government shutdown would be “better than a bad bill”
He was one of 38 Rs who voted against Trump-backed CR tonight
Asked about Trump’s primary threat, he said, “That’s fine.”
Wants CR w pay-fors, no debt limit hike

Just as a general matter, I’m certain that you realize that this “purpose” does cost money, right? Quite a bit of money at that, is the unfortunate reality.

My confidence in the right thing being done is partially restored. Several more months of comparable actions with reinforce this opinion.
One vote does not constitute a trend.

Where is your cuck Joey or the Cackler? They are still the President and VP, right? Yet I do not think they are showing any kind of leadership at all.

I just want the right thing done. In a perfect world this is a one page CR to find the government util about March 15, bare bones, let Trump and the next Congress work on the next budget
Sneaking in pork and a bunch of crap is BS.

Well, maybe you are right…this time. That has proved wrong every other time. Those times, including once when Trump was President, the Republican party became so unpopular that support for the shutdowns completely collapsed. Maybe it will be different this time?
