I have a mortgage, can I tell M&T to stop sending me bills?

I would never do that.

What is this bullshite? I’m not talking about the merits of holding off on evictions. I’m sure there are arguments to be made on both sides of that.

How in the everloving hell does the CDC have any authority over evictions? Trump should put an end to this and refer it to the proper authorities who handle eviction regulations. The CDC has gotten a bit of power this year and let it go to their head.

Feels kind of like the Dept of Education declaring they have overturned Roe v Wade.

How exactly does the Centers for Disease Control declare you can't evict someone from a rental property?

ETA: Toward the end of the article...

quote:

As for those asking just why on earth a decision to halt evictions is being made by the CDC and not say... Congress, an official said "the CDC director has authority to take measures that he's reasonably necessary to mitigate the spread of communicable disease."

quote:

“Congress has delegated broad authority to HHS, the Surgeon General and CDC, to take reasonable efforts to combat the spread of communicable diseases, and frankly I think it makes sense for those authorities abroad because we don't know for any given situation or scenario what steps will be needed to stop the spread,” an administration official said. “I think, in this particular order, the CDC has made a very compelling case that it is quite problematic at this particular time. It's focused on this particular pandemic, which is obviously the uniquely powerful grasp in the nation's entire history in terms of the effect it's had that for a bunch of reasons in particular, that the home has been sort of the focal point of people social distancing and building, sort of a safe space themselves over the past few months, and also the fact that if people get kicked out, they may end up in overcrowded congregated living facilities or homeless shelters, and that is a potential recipe for a big spread of COVID-19.”

quote:

Asked why that authority wasn’t being used to enact a federal mask mandate, officials refused to answer because the question didn’t "have to do with the call at hand."

Setting that aside, it boggles my mind that a large swath of the population believes eviction moratoriums are how to remedy these insane lockdowns. This country is so far removed from the ideals up which it was founded it has become unrecognizable. This is what SC Libertarian was talking about in another post.

Correct there is no way a policy like this goes out without approval from Trump. The CDC is part of the executive branch and so Trump is ultimately the person making this call.

I would like to know under what authority they can override state eviction statutes. I have sympathy for the tenants, but what about the property owners who have mortgages to pay? Where does the buck stop?

How about these use their “authority” to shut down these protests?

Doesn't matter if Trump endorsed it or not. It is bad policy and I would like to see how the CDC has any say in this.

what if the rental property is being financed and the finance company forecloses. or if the land owner has the water in his/her name and shuts it off... by law tenants can't stay...

My company is going by cdc guidelines.... I asked them if they are so concerned about our health, why is the building full of soda and snack machines.... science proves corn syrup kills more people than guns and covid combined.
