The caravan flag bearers

Can anyone explain why someone seeking asylum from an “oppressive” country would be proudly waiving their country’s flag?
Is there any precedent for this? Honest question.
Did Jews escaping Germany wave the German flag?
Did Vietnamese fleeing communism wave their flag?

Had this discussion with my fiancé today. I don’t understand why people from economically depressed and oppressed economies leave their country (obviously for the opportunities here) but at the same time would want to turn the US into the third world hell hole they left.

Likewise, most Vietnamese refugees were from the South, and it would not surprise me if they retained RVN flags.
I doubt that the Jews carried the Nazi flag or that RVN refugees carried the DRV flag.
