That's funny. The victims say otherwise. Other than Public events and Trump catching a lift on Epstein's plane. There is no proof thaf Trump "partied" with Epstein.

Yes it is a rsk but id rather take a chance on our neighbors and not let China keep buying up south America.

If all of central America was like costa rica wed have a lot less migration problems.

You do understand that 'returns' can be intangible too, right?!?! Like regional security and strategic alliances. Get it?!?!

No bailout while government is shut down.

Baw doesnt want to sell the beans so he will sit on them hoping the price comes up. But hes losing money by just sitting on them too.

China throwing money into the Argentine money pit would be bad how?

Because they would own Argentina the same way they own Africa and the other nations I mentioned now?

Are you familiar with the concept of hemispheric defense? We can only be passive in the eastern hemisphere if we maintain control in the west or else China will fill that gap.

With any investment you have to ask what's the risk/return. What's the potential return on our investment vs the the money disappearing into Argentine debt or the peso continuing to crash or Milei losing significant power in the mid-terms?

I think Argentina is salvageable with help and Milei.

No I’m just not an absolutist. I see a massive difference between not wanting a war in Ukraine we have to pay for vs keeping China out of SA.

Isn't this just a currency swap?

Great but what's the risk of losing billions of dollars vs any potential return that you've outlined. Look at the peso chart. I can't see the future but it's reasonable to think that the line will continue down to the right. And what happens if Milei gets pounded in upcoming midterms.

These are real hard-earned taxpayer dollars vs ideals and there is significant risk that those dollars will be wasted. Who knows, maybe we'll get some return but the risk that they'll be squandered for nothing is painfully obvious.

That's my understanding from what I read a few days ago.

I wasn't sure if the OP had new information since he used the word "bailout."

It’s conditional on Milei winning. This motivates people to vote for him thus keeping Argentina from returning to perionism.

quote:

"Your poll numbers I hear are pretty good, but I think they'll be better after this," Trump said as he hosted right-wing Milei at the White House, days after his administration promised $20 billion to prop up the peso.

"And you know, our approvals are somewhat subject to who wins the election, because if a socialist... wins you feel a lot differently about making an investment,” said the Republican leader, adding that the election is being “watched by the world.”

It’s a nice spot of land to take if they default. Big shoreline, lots of farmland. Need infrastructure.

Long game.

Africa isn’t a country or even a nation.
It’s a continent

Would you feel better if I listed all the nations China has subverted via debt service that those nations can’t repay?

If they oust Milei we have to decide whether we want to color revolution them or just pull our promised support.

The money is an investment, I hope that we’ve gotten promises relative to hard resources to underwrite it but frankly Trump has the best track record of any American president in my lifetime for not wasting money on foreign deals so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Sort of. But it's more along the lines of we just guaranteed their IMF loan that they received in April.

They may not default on this, but if the peso goes into a free fall after the mid terms later this month, it will be a really bad deal as opposed to a bad deal currently. Think spending / swapping 20 billion and receiving in turn what amounts to glorified monopoly money.

Argentina has a problem in that they are an agricultural big player, but for a country of it's size , it's industrial base is shite....and 20 billion from us or the ChiComs won't make much of a difference. They've defaulted 23 times....does not matter who is running the show whether it is Menem or Alfonsin...or Kirchner.
