It's almost like he doesn't need to buy their votes anymore.

The legislature just got more conservative. He knows they won't support another raise again this quickly.

LINKy
Here you go.

Teachers mortgaging this state because of a politician that “values them” by promising a mediocre raise reneges on said raise as soon as he’s elected?

Just hate to see it.

I'm so sick of hearing teachers bitch about not getting paid enough. Go do something else if it's that big of a problem.

They deserve a raise for having to deal with these kids and parents.

The value of any position is largely based on replacement value.
Someone should teach the teachers about that concept.

Did they not know the salary expectations when the decided to pursue their career?

No Louisiana governor is EVER a lame duck. They just have too many tools.

That said, of the second term governors we have had since term limits, he is the lamest of them.

My wife is a teacher and got this raise (I did too, as support staff).
She's making $20 less a month bc of how they taxed the raise

She's pissed

What kind of bitching are you talking about? Yea, I get pretty tired of hearing people like Bernie insisting that we set a price floor of 60K for every teacher.

But virtually every professional in this country gets at least a cost of living adjustment. That teachers so rarely do gives them pretty good reason to bitch as far as I can tell.

Do you think he’ll run for the US Senate down the road? It’s either that or retire, right?

Unfortunately, teachers need to understand that JBE has no plan to generate state revenue much less distribute teacher pay raises. He’s a trial lawyer.

Sorry, but educators DO deserve better. Next time ask HOW before placing your vote. Do YOUR homework.

Ding ding ding

It is not hard to become a teacher and there is a massive pool of replacements, if needed.

Teachers aren’t paid more because their individual value is low and they are easily replaceable.

Make it harder to be a teacher and the pay will increase.

Replacing the best teachers is extremely difficult. When they are truly good at what they do, they offer an immense value that simply can’t be replicated by an average Joe off the street.

THAT SAID, the teachers unions have fricked those people by mandating that all teachers earn the same. Because of that, there’s very little reason for those truly great teachers to stick around in the field, which makes it so that a larger portion of the teaching population falls into that ‘easy to replace’ category.

Everything about the schooling market is broken. We need to bring merit pay and student choice to the system or any changes made will be marginal at best.

That's not necessarily true. Cost of living adjustments aren't always a norm in the private sector.

Their benefits, especially retirement, are never factored in when discussing pay because that's where the real value is despite the fact that it's not necessarily tangible on a day to day basis.
