This is the latest proof of, "It's our money, not yours!"
quote:

The cat-and-mouse game between state tax collectors and wealthy New Yorkers who are moving to Florida has reached new levels — and gone high tech. New federal tax laws limiting the deduction of state and local income taxes have created incentives for wealthy New Yorkers to move to Florida or other lower-tax states.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last month blamed wealth flight for the state’s $2.3 billion revenue shortfall in December and January.

“Tax the rich, tax the rich, tax the rich,” he said. “We did. Now, God forbid, the rich leave.”

But the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is making sure that high earners who try to leave don’t escape without an audit and a bill.

More than half of those who were audited lost their cases, and the average collected by New York State between 2015 and 2017 was $144,270 per audit.

New York conducted about 3,000 “nonresidency” audits a year between 2010 and 2017, collecting around $1 billion, according to Monaeo, a company that sells an app for tracking and proving tax residency.

Rush has talked about this a lot. He said the state of NY harassed him for 10 years after he moved to Florida.

if the money was earned in New York its taxed in New York, moving away doesnt absolve you of the commitment to pay taxes there. i'm pretty sure Louisiana would come after me if i owed state taxes and moved to new york as well

i havent read the article yet tho

It was Chuck Schumer who was calling for a massive tax on anyone rescinding their citizenship and moving elsewhere.

As if they were taking the government's money with them.

I lived in Parkland for a while. Coworker told me a story about a sign that was posted in the Palm Beach county courthouse for a long time that read, "We don't care how you did it in New York. This is Florida, and we are going to do it our way."

I got so tired of hearing that accent there.

It's an interesting story. They audit him every year to find if he has ever worked a day in NY since leaving. They will then tax his income for that day by taking his annual income and dividing by 365.

The burden of proof is on him (and his accountant) to prove where he was every day of every year. Rush found an easy way to do that. He submits his cell phone records for the year which shows where he was on that day making or receiving a call.

My fault for not being more specific. Schumer was calling for a federal tax on people leaving the country and rescinding their citizenship.

The rich people leaving are the "vote your wallet" types more than likely...

If they were that type, NY wouldn't have the government it has.

Florida, Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee will all be blue eventually. That is where people from NY, NJ, and California are fleeing to.
