Yeah... if your job is in New York, you can't get out of paying New York taxes simply by moving your place of residence to Florida.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last month blamed wealth flight for the state’s $2.3 billion revenue shortfall in December and January.

“Tax the rich, tax the rich, tax the rich,” he said. “We did. Now, God forbid, the rich leave.”

No but what you can do is own multiple pieces of property and file taxes in the state you are "primarily" in. That's where this whole thing gets dicey. Is it considered NY or FL tax if the person works for a NY company but is living in Florida 200 days out of the year? It's a loophole the rich are trying to exploit.

wouldnt it always be based on wherever the person signing your checks is located? if the company you are working for is claiming they paid you X amount on their NY tax return then your earned money would be taxed in NY, even if you were working remotely from florida

No, it's where the money was earned for the most part.

We’ve had our share of Blue Dogs in TN, but we’ve got more churches than progressive liberals in TN. This is ground zero for the Bible Belt. Abortion advocacy is turning TN more and more red. Without a massive shift in Democratic policy, I doubt TN will be blue outside small districts in hipster areas and Memphis/Chattanooga minority heavy areas

In the mid nineties, I used an international mail forwarding service in Connecticut for a couple years. Second year I get a bill for 20 grand, interest accumulating. After 3 months of back and forth, they gave up when presented with passport records showing I was not only out of Ct but also out of Country. Tax records also showed Texas prior to going out of country. They high tax states have data search programs to examine company payroll records and mailing addresses

Virginia and North Carolina are the blueprint for Tennessee going blue. Centralized metro areas that become trendy with young professionals, especially in the tech sector, and a large influx of immigrants. We have the former happening, but not the latter. The suburbs here are still incredibly red and even Knoxville, for all its growth, is still fairly conservative in comparison to similarly sized metros.

Im assuming its people who have two homes and are claiming their primary residence is in Florida, thereby avoiding NY state tax.

The software app is probably modeled on the IRS making you justify that you do in fact live outside the US if you are a US citizen. Huge personal tax benefits for expats, but you literally have to justify where you laid your head each night, and no doubt they can check this against your passport.

Because many of the cities in the north are losing residents, they have also instituted a "capital gains" type tax on selling your home, since you are not reinvesting that capital in the state, they can whack you with a nice bill as you head south.

My point was, the state of New York is doing the same thing the IRS does regarding expats (people who claim to live outside the US). You can have a "home" outside the US, you can claim your income outside the US. But you have to fill out a spreadsheet for where you worked each day (which they check against your passport log). If you stayed a certain number of days in the states during the tax year, they consider you a resident of the US and tax you as such.

And the tax benefits of living outside the US are huge, because the assumption is you are already paying taxes in your home country.
