They still don't - State now walking back the 4100 figure.

Also, WSJ reporting that CIA is running ops in and out of Kabul to get Americans out. With JSOC resources I assume.

This guys reply to that tweet really shows this Administration thought process.

State claiming less than 1000 "actively trying to leave"

When it comes out that "actively" doesn't include those scared to make the trip...

The dirty truth of the matter is that any civilians left behind, whether American or otherwise, are due to this Administration.

He says there are 1000 that they can’t reach even though they have tried many times. He kind of brushed it off like those aren’t his problem but what if a lot of them aren’t responding because they’re dead?

I have no idea what's real but it seems obvious to me that there is a great deal of uncertainty in the administration and there is a recent (last 48 hours) move toward using the data most favorable to them optically.

Hence, 10-15k Americans becomes "we've evac'd 4500, 1500 are left, only 500 want to leave"

Best guess is that they know STEP may not be reliable and hence the larger figures 7-10 days ago, but now that it's politically disastrous to suggest there are an untold number of folks stuck that they don't know about and aren't going to concern themselves with (to save a shitty, useless deal with the Taliban that has no enforcement mechanism beyond resumed use of force), they're falling back to the STEP figures.

This administration will most certainly leave US citizens to die if they can figure out a way to spin it and keep the poll numbers up.

Blinken is answering questions at his press conference. First person in this administration that looks completely defeated! It looks good on him!!

Y’all remember when they told us “this is not Saigon!!” a week ago? This is immeasurably worse.

New York Post

Nearly two dozen California students and parents are among the thousands currently stranded in Afghanistan after taking a summer trip to visit family.

Twenty-three students from the Cajon Valley Union School District, just outside San Diego, are stuck in Kabul with their parents after traveling to the war-torn country, the LA Times reports.

They are trying to make their way to the airport or board one of the US military flights out of Kabul before the Aug. 31 deadline to withdraw US troops arrives.

It was not immediately clear when the families arrived in Afghanistan, but Cajon Valley Superintendent David Miyashiro said they had traveled there on special visas for US military service.

Or that have tried and been turned back. I will give them credit, they know using the right verbiage will convince many of their cultish followers they are doing all they can.

Looks like they were there to visit family. I'm assuming one or more of the parents served as interpreters for the US at one point, hence the special military visas.

So, Blinken said, "There is no deadline on US evacuation efforts."?

That's not what his boss said yesterday. That's not what the administration told our allies in the G7.
