I also just read this on The Guardian. Really makes you wonder what the Biden Administration was thinking.

This is embarrassing and stupid. Someone explain why our military with resources to do so that are safer and more well defended aren’t capable of evacuating 8K+ Americans from a war zone? Why ask private airliners, who imo will be a bigger target for attack, to go do this? Why after all this time have our people STILL not been evacuated in the first place?
I know these questions won’t be appropriately answered by the right people, but this is fricking ridiculous and feels like they’re trying to recreate Dunkirk - probably because someone made a meme about it to insult the administration.

American carriers will not be going to Kabul, only to connecting locations.

Military will fly in and out of Kabul and then drop them off in say Qatar. Civilian fleet will take them from there. That way mil flights don’t have to take them all the way to the US. Can make more turns in a day.

US civilians are still there because they chose to stay in a war zone until the situation got untenable. As I stated before this is a known problem for planning civilian evac operations. State Dept typically waits till last minute hoping to stave off signaling collapse of local govt. Using civilian air for transport is nothing new. CNN is now reporting 5k plus already evacd to Ramstein, Germany. Airlines would be used to move them from there and other sites so military airlift can continue cycling in and out of Kabul. If anything, this is good move that might have been useful sooner.

EDIT: Saw you got to that later in the post, but yeah, they’re trying to recreate Dunkirk, but that’s just not going to happen. At least we knew where the soldiers were at that time, but all these people are scattered through the city.
