White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that there are about 11,000 “self-identified” US citizens remaining in Afghanistan, who still need to be evacuated.
But Pentagon press secretary John Kirby had previously put that number somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000, demonstrating the interagency confusion within the Biden administration as Kabul evacuation efforts continue, a Politico editor noted.

This is completely MIND BLOWING to me. We can't track our own military assets worth billions? cool.
We can't even track the number of American civilians in the capital city of a country that is an active war zone, baw.

Our allies were hiding in fear for their lives. They couldn’t make it to the airport. Maybe the 670 were ordinary citizens, but maybe they were able to safely make it to the airport because they had safe passage from the Taliban.

As of a day or so ago, there wasn’t a large contingent of Taliban in Kabul. More were on the way and may be there now. However, doing something that forces US retaliation is the last thing they want right now as the US is voluntarily leaving and losing credibility on the world stage in the process.
I'm worried we'll get into a spot where the administration looks the other way to avoid growing the confrontation. "You were fired on by the Taliban on the way to the airport? How can you know that, it'd be a lot better if that didn't happen."
The reality is, I think, the Taliban knows the quickest way to pretty unfettered control is to let the Americans get our top priorities out. This administration will cave and leave plenty of Afghans behind and the Taliban knows that, but they know Biden can't let that happen to citizens or very close assets. But, I also question how successful the Taliban leadership will be in keeping all of its elements in line if this drags on a few weeks.
And truth be told, Biden wanting to avoid having to go to war over a citizen getting killed is a legitimate political consideration. It's happened over and over again in our meddling, and I get it. But that's what's at stake when you let a shitshow develop like this. An isolated bad incident involving one of our people and this catastrophe goes nuclear.

Since Joe doesn’t seem up to it this week maybe Hunter can take over temporarily to right the ship

That region of the world has some of the most beautiful women. Too bad all are criminally repressed and oppressed.

If we had a real administration; the CIA would stop doing black market drug sales from Afghanistan and jump on Hunter Biden's art collection / NFTs / and Crypto.

Or maybe they were planted there by the Taliban.

Would be kinda funny to have our president smoke crack and then get up and address the nation.

I imagine there has been a discussion among officials on a number of acceptable American deaths over this. I'm sure it also included the best way to minimize public knowledge of the eventual death toll.

So....who, exactly are we getting out of the country?
It's not like this is some international airport like O'Hare, Atlanta, Houston, etc. It's a one runway stripe of an airport with little to no facilities for passengers.
Folks aren't sitting in air conditioned surroundings waiting for their flight at the restaurant/bar. Restrooms, food, water and necessities can't be readily available and they've been there for freaking days waiting to get evacuated.

Not true, they have a bad arse Chili's in that airport. Can be kind of a hassle to get to if you fly Southwest though.

This is very confusing. We’re beefing up airport security, but don’t have a plan to get the thousands to the airport safely? Not to mention, just yesterday they were told to shelter in place.
What a shite show, can’t imagine what they feel like. Damn near completely abandoned and left for dead by the president/government.
US Embassy in Kabul tells Americans to shelter in place; Afghan president flees the country
After this shite show, Republicans should win 90% of the House and every seat in the Senate outside of Vermont and Hawaii. This is just unbelievable.

Agree. If the Taliban wanted bloodshed/revenge for years of occupation, then the airport would likely be a war zone right now.
Now is the time to provide armed escorts, evacuating. It feels like the Taliban wants us all out, and to seal off their country, outside communication (north korea’ish) and install militant Islam with total control.

If they massacre the airport, then the Biden administration would have the excuse to start bombing. I think they’re going to mostly leave the airport alone for the next two weeks changing in September.

All of the western press are at the Airport which is why they haven't stormed the place. Its good PR not to kill everyone on camera but behind the scenes out of the cameras eyes is a different story.
