Indeed. It's a curiosity why Africa failed in the post-imperial era compared to India, Pakistan or the various island nations around the globe. One has to look no further than South Africa or Zimbabwe...or perhaps the worst, Mozambique. They were centuries behind the Europeans technologically and culturally. When the Euros finally let go of their colonies, you could hear the repeated beep of a society that just put the transmission in reverse.

It is also true that the most successful nations are those that held-on to some semblance of the European institutions established under colonial rule, the public school, university, elected local governments, etc.
