Losing Birmingham-Southern College ‘would be a travesty,’ lawmakers say in call for $30 million bailout: Jabo Waggoner said Alabama and Birmingham need Birmingham-Southern “alive and well.”
Jabo Waggoner is a Repube and is the longest serving Swamp Rat in Montgomery. Yet Jabo has long promoted himself as being a staunch conservative. Oh, did I mention he is a Birmingham Southern alum?

I remember hear 10-15 years ago the BSU was buying up houses all around the University. Guess that didn't work out.

If they will fly the Ukrainian flag on campus for a few days they'd have that money in no time.

It was a supposed beautification effort. The school would need to buy up & demolish many of the houses in a 5 mile radius to make that area of Birmingham “beautiful.”

Yet going on such a lavish building spree before the Great Recession has contributed to many of the financial difficulties for the college. The college repeatedly has been forced to dip into the principle of it’s endowment to stay afloat because of financial mismanagement:

Judson College, one of Alabama’s oldest colleges and one of the nation’s oldest all-girls colleges, went belly up just last year. Where was their bailout?

Isn’t this a private liberal arts college in the ghetto of Birmingham?
I knew a lawyer who went there for undergrad. She was nice, pretty, smart, reserved.

I’m sure BSC grads have been richly rewarded because of the education they received at the school. All the more reason the school needs to look to it’s alumni to get its financial affairs in order and quit begging for handouts.

It was probably an attempt to create a buffer zone around the college. The area adjacent to the college has deteriorated over the years from a crime standpoint.
