Squatters have internet too. Judge probably made the homeowner share his wifi password

False. It should be done AND be all over the news.

depends on the situation - I am trying to find out if there really are instances of a 'squatter' taking over a person's home while that person goes out for lunch - Just do not believe there are such instances
I think it MUST be exaggerations stemming from occupancy of untended properties. THAT would just be a 'property rights' problem
taking over someone's HOME is much much more an attack on the person, than it is just property ownership disagreement. That would be no different than being attacked on the street --- fight to the death is reasonable response.

I just cannot conjure up a rational scenario where this could possibly be a 'thing' - sounds more like it could only happen to untended, vacant properties.
When people are willing to commit fraud, lots of possibilities open up to exploit people/systems.
That comment isn't exclusive to squatting.

ays they live there and rent from you.
From that point its a civil matter not criminal so it has to go to court
Would there not be a step in there where the police asked to see the 'lease' and ask you if that was your signature>?
Do you still have home owner's insurance for that property, or has your mortgage payments still up to date? still paying the water and power bills?
Ask around the neighborhood to determine who actually lived there and if anyone was aware of your vacation'?
Are your belongings still in the home? if not did the neighbors notice how they were removed? Are your kids still enrolled in school from that address??
it seems to me there are MANY practical 'proof of life' type questions that could be asked in the moment that would clear up the situation to a rational degree. - and that it would be up to the 'squatter' to prove their 'lease' was actually legitimate -
this all seems totally backward to me - and has been exaggerated all out of proportion by some remote - possibly ridiculous - occurrence.
I cannot believe it is a situation that needs to be worried about unless you have a very unusual lifestyle and/or live intermittently in very remote locales.
I am just curious - I have noted these cases for the past couple of years and have never asked about how it occurs til now - I still do not thing it is a 'thing' to be so worried about as to be prompted into unusual precautionary steps.

“I have a lease” after they quickly write the address.
Wouldn’t the owners’ signatures be on there too?

Sounds like the cops took care of them. Didn’t even have to murder anyone.

Cops can't do anything about it.

When I moved to Maryland several years ago, there was a nice house in the neighborhood I ultimately bought in that was extremely cheap compared to others in the neighborhood.
When I called about it, I was told the house was being sold “as is” and there were squatters that had been there for years.
Maryland gun laws are far too strict for me to deal with that. This was a gated neighborhood on a golf course near the beach, not some Chicago or Baltimore ghetto.

No. That's a civil determination that has to be made by a judge.
That's why LEO says "civil matter" when the lease issue is presented. They're not trained or capable of making that determination, especially without due process.

Chicago where the homeowner moved in with the squatter
Please explain the sequence here
so the house was vacant, squatter moves in, then homeowner comes back, "moves in"

Here in Trinidad, a supposed 3rd world country, we have a national ID. If this happened here, the cops would ask for your ID and if it did not match the address they would haul your arse to jail. And if you came up with some nonsense about you just moved and your ID did not match......they would haul your arse to jail for falsification of national ID.
