We all know the Iraq war was started on false pretenses. The interesting question that to this day as far as I know has never been answered is why?

Based on the treaty from Desert Storm we were supposed to have the ability to inspect for weapons of mass destruction. When Bush went to send in inspectors Sadaam wouldn't allow them in.

It's amazing to me how few people understand that the fundamental basis for the belief that Iraq had WMDs was a simple matter of the inventory taken after the first Gulf War and what they had NOT shown UN Arms Inspectors as having been destroyed or dismantled from that inventory. It wasn't "a spy said you had X." It was "we KNOW you had X in 1991 so what happened to it??"

Pretty sure Saddam killed thousands of Kurds in the late 80s. With both Mustard gas, Sarin, VX nerve agents.

It was even more direct eyewitness accounts within the Bush administration. Either Rumsfeld or Cheney, I forget which, was present when Saddam tested the gas they were peddling on the Kurds before GW was elected. The US had access to the actual shipping manifests of the precursors and ready products sold. They could then simply calculate the amount used based on the number of uses and area/conditions keeping a running tally of inventory.

My theory on this was that Saddam knew well in advance we were coming and he moved that stuff out of the country before we attacked and what was not moved was buried in the sand.
The other thing is that the government overstated the size and scope of the WMD’s Saddam had.
Some of what was buried was found but it wasn’t as much as what was stated by intelligence community. The media and intelligence community then conspired to dismiss any findings to make Bush look bad.
