Brondello is from Australia and has coached the national team since 2017. Multiple native Australians explained to ESPN that the phrase "protected species" has been used in Australian sports environments to express frustration over a lack of calls against a player -- as in the player being treated or officiated differently from others.

However, in American culture, a phrase that indicates someone is not human has a history of derogatory use toward Black people

No it doesnt

"He's a beast" is now derogatory to black people? They call Wemby the alien. Is that derogatory too? "Half man, half amazing" clearly says the player is less than human.

Maybe you are right. This has been going on right under our noses for generations!

They called Shaq a big cactus in Phoenix; fricking white supremacy everywhere. They called Kobe a fricking snake, and of course it was a black one. Im outraged.

We need a list of all the less than human derogatory statements the sports media has been making about our proud black brothers and sisters.

Certain people have become accustomed to promoting their fragility.

It’s 2026 and it’s the WNBA and it involves Angel Reese.
Instead of WNBA, they want it to be the BWNBA.
Any whitey is the devil.
That is why the coach apologized.

Blacks are so emotionally fragile. Words make them completely shut down.

Oh no! Not "derogatory use toward Black people"! How ever shall any survive!?!

While we all contemplate how we can possibly move forward from such trauma, I'll be perusing pictures from an administration during a kinder, more gentle time...

some people have a better grasp of the English language than others. Unfortunately, the low IQ amongst us are louder and to many are afraid of them.

Our nations future is royally fricked, and not really seeing the path changing.

Unfortunately, I should have took a breath and realized where I am in America because I know racism is such a big issue here.

It's a non-issue for me. The bigger issue, in my life, is losers like you who capitulate to crap like this.
