Lettuce or salad greens could be the source of Michigan’s outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an infection characterized by intense diarrhea, state health officials said Monday.
“Early information has shown lettuce as a common product that regularly comes up during the investigation,” Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, the state’s chief medical executive, said in a statement.
There is not enough information to pinpoint the type of produce, the grower or the supplier, and other food items cannot be ruled out, the state Department of Health and Human Services said in the same statement.
The finding applies only to Michigan, which has had the lion’s share of cases so far: 2,640. Total cases number near 3,000 for the foodborne gastrointestinal illness, which has shown up in 31 states as part of a national outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC said 86 people have been hospitalized. The numbers often lag behind, however, as it can take a week for symptoms to appear, health experts say.

Michigan health officials urged consumers to avoid prepackaged salads and opt for individual heads of lettuce that should be rinsed thoroughly. Outer layers should be discarded, they said, and vegetables should be cooked when possible.

Damn this to hell. For years, all the industry (and their retailers) have told consumers... You don't know what's on that head of lettuce, buy this overpriced [now vastly overpriced bag of washed, and shredded lettuce which starts turning bad 8 hours after you open it].
Unbelievable.

I thought they were talking about those prepackaged salad kits people buy for lunch. I didn't eat them even before this because they turn me into a liquid salad shooter. I think they have always been tainted
I am talking about these

In more than one chicken processing plant I have been to, they had to move the sinks out of the restrooms into the hallways so they could put cameras on them. The Mexican workforce wouldn't wash their hands otherwise.

If you think about it, it’s obvious a sick migrant crop picker would poop in the fields when he’s got the Hershey squirts. If you’ve ever seen them on those old school buses you know they show up and work a field for a day or two and are on to the next field. They go where they are needed and surely there is mixing among the crews.
When his fellow migrant crop pickers eventually catch whatever the first guy had they’re now pooping in multiple fields. This microbe thrives in soil and on produce. So it’s going to be around a while.
They either don’t believe in germs or don’t care.
(Anecdotally, I was sitting in a jam packed dentist office in south Texas where every single person was knuckle deep picking boogers, all at the same time. We’re talking 40-50 people. I liken it to how a yawn can spread to everyone on a train or plane or bus.)
Then when it inevitably gets on the vegetable or fruit and the processing begins, the whole batch gets contaminated. They probably “wash” or rinse huge batches with the same equipment and viola, everything put through that equipment is contaminated with poop.
22 minute video from a John Hopkins affiliate doctor.
TLDW: chlorine doesn’t kill the microbes, but cooking does.

I would hope they're wearing disposable nitrile or latex gloves while working with raw chicken.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone working in a chicken plant without gloves.

Can confirm: my stepson lives in MI and he is recovering from the Mexican bacteria strain. Sounded like pre-colonoscopy prep, but for 3 days straight.

The FDA and Department of Agriculture should be inspecting the fields, processing buildings, etc., of all who export perishables to the USA. It will never happen because we like our 'cheap' shite. Furthermore, big bid-ness would not want others prodding into their processes and violations regarding labor, etc. The other thing that could be done is to place the onus on businesses which import. They should be inspecting and insuring the 'quality control' of the produce, etc., which they import to USA.

Leafy greens cause stomach problems regardless.

give me meat and dairy and nuts any day all day every day.
