I have kids in college right now. I’m paying their way with money I’ve set aside since they were born. Am I going to encourage TD hen to go get $10K in loans because it will probably get covered? Hell no.

There are plenty of ways to rationalize this issue. Some sound justifiable.
But like it or not, this issue is a matter of integrity, honesty, and honor.
So if you have a mortgage and the bank called today and forgave it, you would say "no thanks, I insist on continuing to make payments"?

It's one of the real disappointments with this board over the last few years. It has the same problem Twitter does: Far too many want to manipulate a legitimate question and turn it into a moral issue.
My original question certainly prompts that as part of the answer, but the extrapolation of "Do I take the same thing everyone else is?" to "If you can't pay your own bills you are a dumb low-life" is just frustrating. It pre-supposes things that can't be known from this thread and just puts such a toxic element into the conversation.
Again, like Twitter, too many people come here to claim moral and intellectual high ground instead of just engaging in good faith debate.
