NYT: For These Women, a FIRE That Burns Too Male and Too White
quote:
Kiersten Saunders stumbled upon the FIRE movement — an acronym for “financial independence, retire early” — the way most people do: by reading about it online. But also like most people, she couldn’t relate to its membership, which seemed largely white, male and based in Silicon Valley.
quote:
A central tenet of the movement is that with enough grit, financial savvy, and willingness to eat rice and beans, “anyone” can do it. But that’s simply not true.
quote:
“There’s this mind-set in FIRE discussions that you have to cut out everything that’s not essential, but what’s essential to a white male is very different from what’s essential to me,” says Mrs. Saunders, who plans to hit her FIRE number (which she calculated using the 4 percent rule, a popular tactic in which retirees withdraw no more than 4 percent of their total savings each year) in 2021.
“There’s a cost to maintaining this Afro,” she adds. “There’s a cost to taking care of my skin. You don’t have to cut them to be on the FIRE path — it may take you a little longer, but it’s not a competition.”

I'm familiar with FIRE. I could do it easily since I was accustomed to poverty and 4% would be easy for me to live on till I die.
But women are totally different. The term 'necessity' does not register in their brains. They shop for the same reason guys look at porn. Shopping gives them an orgasm.
They also don't understand the concept of 'quantity'.
If one hand bag gives you happiness, then 100 handbags gives you an abundance of happiness.
Guys are content with 1 wallet.

If not for the prospect of getting laid, most guys would be content with a couch, a bed, a TV, a shitter, and a fridge.

I have 1 wallet, there is no point in a second wallet.
My GF bought me like 4 pairs of jeans at one time. That gave 5 pairs of jeans. That's way too many pairs of jeans.

Who knew that getting your hair did prevents you from being financially responsible. Damn white men and their hair care supremacy.

This would be the greatest thread ever if our handful of female poliboard posters chimed in.

of course, if white men got afros and spent money to maintain them, that'd be cultural appropriation.

I haven't had a hair cut since right before thanksgiving. Not kidding.
If I can do that, and look this good, Foxy Brown and her afro can at least put some work in on the home front beauty studio and do some self upkeep, or change her hairstyle to save $$ every month.

Throw in a small Gateway computer and this was my entire apartment as a single guy.

As long as I had AC and TV, I could live in a portable building.

I can’t fricking believe this is our actual reality.
This is Idiocracy.

Would beer be in that fridge? If so, I'm in.

I get a $20 haircut about every two months. It costs my wife, a black woman, considerably more for hair care over that same time frame. Call it $300 for the salon and hair care products. And my wife doesn't need weaves which can run thousands of dollars. The woman in the article has a point that black hair care is more expensive. It is a multi-billion dollar industry. But all women pay more than men for upkeep, that's just a fact of life. Blaming white men because her 4C afro is so expensive to maintain, to the point that she can't reach her financial goals, is a cop out for her own financial irresponsibility.

You cover it later in your statement, which I applaud.

The fact here is that women choose to keep up, they literally don't have to. I understand why they do, but it is still a choice.
Just like the vast, overwhelming majority of men choose to pay more for dining / entertainment / general relationships than women. They don't have to, but they do.
I say all this because we have a growing problem in our society where people who choose to do something because it is a social norm, suddenly want to make their choices everyone else's problem. No matter what it is, your choices are (or should be) no one else's responsibility.
Last time I checked, there wasn't anyone lining up to compensate me because I choose to pay someone to cut my lawn vs doing it myself. This argument of haircare holding the black woman down is the same thing.
