Can't help but wonder if this had been set up to provide more for white voters than for blacks (the exact opposite of what it is), how quickly it would have been decried as "racist".

Ok, blacks are typically poorer than their asian and white counterparts. I would expect they receive aid at a higher rate..

Yes, and that's why they chose to specifically target these grants in addition to other loans.

Kinda shifting the goal post here.

ETA As for OP, that seems arse backwards. Why would someone that already got some "free" money also get double the loan forgiveness?

Because you have to be poor to qualify for the Pell grant.

Wait I thought you didn't have to repay Pell Grants if you actually graduate right?

More white people get Pell Grants than black people. The knee jerk reaction to all this is simply hilarious.

And yet refuse to pay back those loans....and don't work because they spent said loans for a shitty, non employable degree. Perfect.

So the people who also got free money from Pell Grants (and most everything else in their life free), will also get their loans forgiven?

fricking clown world.

It's even better than that. The Pell program is robbed of billions a year. A chunk of this "forgiveness" will go to people who defrauded the program.

Serious question.

What happens if you came from a poor family, qualified for Pell Grants, and are now making over 125k a year?

They don’t get help? That’s how arse backwards this country is. You get penalized for living the “American Dream”.

So how does the White House do this? Executive order?

I thought Congress was supposed to control the purse strings.

This is what I'm not clear on. Couldn't the courts potentially strike this down?

Not as a percentage of their individual demographics. Blacks are twice as likely to get PG's than any other demo.

This is going to help way more white people than black people, so I'm not sure where yall are getting this from.

The last year of data is 2018, showing black college students as 13.4% of the total 19.6 million students. Using upgrayedd's percentages for Pell grant recipients, Almost twice as many white students will benefit from this relative to black students.

Well, I'm a sucker for saving in a 529 plan and foregoing extra consumption all those years so that I could pay for my kids' college and they would not have to take out loans like I did (way back in the day) to go to college. I'm sure there are lots like me as well, and we are more likely to vote than some Gen Z kid who just got his loan forgiven. T

This is bad policy and bad politics!

You're looking at raw numbers, not percentage by individual demo.

This is exactly like the classic "more white people are on welfare" trope.
