Sixteen members of the University of Pennsylvania’s women’s swimming and diving team said the NCAA’s recent update to its policy for transgender athletes, which may bar trans swimmer Lia Thomas from competing in the athletic association’s championships in March, should be upheld.

“We fully support Lia Thomas in her decision to affirm her gender identity and to transition from a man to a woman. Lia has every right to live her life authentically,” the athletes wrote in a letter Thursday to school and Ivy League officials obtained by the Washington Post. “However, we also recognize that when it comes to sports competition, that the biology of sex is a separate issue from someone’s gender identity. Biologically, Lia holds an unfair advantage over competition in the women’s category, as evidenced by her rankings that have bounced from #462 as a male to #1 as a female.”

“If she were to be eligible to compete against us, she could now break Penn, Ivy, and NCAA Women’s Swimming records; feats she could never have done as a male athlete,” the athletes wrote.

The letter was unsigned and was sent by Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a 1984 Olympic swimming gold medalist and chief executive of Champion Women, a women’s sports advocacy group. She sent the letter on the swimmer’s behalf because they had been told they “would be removed from the team” or “never get a job offer” if they spoke out against Thomas’ inclusion in women’s competition, according to the Washington Post.

Apparently “her” still has HIS frank & beans. Yeah, I’d say that’s a bit of an unfair advantage.

What changes did it make? When did this happen?

The NCAA last month updated its eligibility criteria for transgender athletes, which the athletic association said will now be determined by the national governing body of each sport. Under its previous framework, first introduced in 2010, female athletes could compete for a collegiate women’s sports team after completing a full year of testosterone suppression treatment

The national governing body for competitive swimming in the U.S., USA Swimming, on Tuesday issued a new policy for transgender athletes in elite competition, which “acknowledges a competitive difference in the male and female categories and the disadvantages this presents in elite head-to-head competition.”

Under the updated policy, which will be implemented by a panel of three medical experts, elite transgender female swimmers will be required to provide “evidence” that a competitive advantage over cisgender athletes does not exist because of their prior physical development “as a male.”

Trans female athletes are also required to keep testosterone levels below 5 nanomoles per liter of blood continuously for at least 36 months – the longest of any sports body.

Well, this is their own fault so frick them.

Stop allowing crazy people to dictate terms to you, and you'll find that things like this won't happen to you.

You incorrectly spelled him as her.

It is women sports, so you just wrote a letter saying 'she' shouldn't be allowed to compete with members of its own gender???

The new rules cuts the allowed testosterone in half and requires the athlete to maintain that level for 36 months before competing, vs the 1 year requirement now.

Good start, but I would like to see how they enforce / test that as I don't believe Lia is really keeping up right now.

given the nature of the tight fitting suits swimmers compete in i can only imagine how absurd this must appear

I sympathize with and agree with the female team members in all things related to this dude beating their arse. HOWEVER, they need to come to grips with the absolute reality that Lia is a PRODUCT of this asinine shite.

Is the lower testosterone going to reduce his wingspan, lung capacity, leg length, etc that he gained from being an actual man his entire life?

You know, the simple solution would be to create a third division, separate from men’s & women’s sports to allow these things to compete against each other.

Oh wait…that’s right. There aren’t ENOUGH OF THEM to justify such a thing.

That's what makes it so dumb.

I'm still looking forward to some long as frick 6'11" dude like Giannis to decide he's a woman and the opportunity for morons to tell me that he doesn't have an unfair advantage because of hormone levels.

This story is the most perfect example of having to lie in a bed you've created I've ever seen in my life.

The only reason they're carving out the exception of "biology" here is because it's effected them DIRECTLY. I assure you, if you were go to back through their social media you'd find that they have absolutely agreed with the phrase "Transwomen ARE Women" before.

You know...just not when it directly effects them that is.

What is the doping limit for females?
It better not be less than 5 nanomoles per liter.

Also, doesn't it seem a bit odd, that men are able to fully develop as a man, bone density, height, weight, muscle density all throughout their lives.... then when they are #463 in the rankings, can claim to be a woman, drop the Test.... and we pretend they don't have all of those other advantages?

You want to dive headlong into this support trans-men thing, fine. Make a division for them.
But let's not pretend that Test levels is the only advantage of biological women.
There clearly is an advantage, thus the reason a woman's division was created in the first place.

I think the silly part is people saying it's "unfair" that they be told they can't compete and there's not enough for a trans division.

Well ya know what? They're no Short NBA also. And, not for nothing, but I was actually kind of a bad mother fricker in the slot for my size back in the day but there's no "reduced size" NFL either.

There's no "right" to compete at an elite level. There's not even the vague expectation of a right. 95% of the public was BORN in such a way that they were never going to be elite athletes. File Trans right in there with "short", "slow", "unathletic", and on and on.

Well ladies it's people like you that have hollered equality since the day you were told to holler equality that are somewhat responsible for this. Thank your sisters in the WBNA and women's pro soccer for the beast that has been unleased. I'd advise you to take a course in progressivism while still in school and be educated on how a molehill turns into a mountain.
