You're not even paying enough attention to know what the discussion I'm having is about. Go back and read the thread or shut the frick up.
I have been paying attention, and it's a stupid point.
Some people enlist because they want citizenship.
Some want to learn appropriate skills.
Some want the benefits of the GI bill.
Some just have no other options.
All of these are valid reasons for serving, and yes, that does mean they may get called up for any number of actions.
Signing up for military service doesn't mean that you give up your right to question the validity of a war.

And they gave you a better life than they had. That’s always been the purpose that drove parents. That was, of course, until your generation.

Dissolve? No
But we should greatly reduce the numbers of rank and file members when not in wartime. Keep the special forces units and enough grunts to maintain our military assets and that’s it
Prior to WW2 that was basically our policy. We didn’t maintain a large standing army when not in wartime. It’s expensive. It’s honestly less necessary today with technology

Is a nuclear armed Iran not a threat to the interests of the United States?
A nuclear armed Iran is more of a threat to the interests of Israel than the interests of the United States. However, now that we're in it, anything less than complete regime change would be a failure.

So how many tours in Iraq or Afghanistan have you done?
How many friends have you lost due to IEDs, friendly fire, medical issues or suicide?
How about divorce? You ever had to go through a breakup of a marriage due to the strain of separation from multiple long deployments?
No? Then SHUT THE frick UP!

Imagine signing up for the fire department, but the government that directs your fire department decides to start 5 fires a night indefinitely in a city that is not your own. Then that governing department makes you go fight the fires night after night that they caused.
California says hey.
And people don't like when we use military at home, even to protect the border.
I don't think the navy's pitch has ever been to join and stay in Missouri. I could be wrong though.

You are bitching about reality. The reality is that people don’t believe the US government anymore and don’t want to fight in wars of choice. That’s why they are having to recruit 40 year olds with a marijuana conviction now.
The US government burned all of its trust capital.
The US government burned all of its trust capital.

quote:I don’t really give a shite why anyone joins. I joined to drink and party around the world. Probably 20% of the guys in my MOS were legitimately unbalanced dudes who just wanted to kill people legally. Do your job, and you’re good with me. Nobody’s shite means more than anyone else’s just because they’ve got Lee Greenwood blasting from their enlistment bonus F150.
Maybe 25% of the new enlistments sign up because they love the country.
If anything, the “Cpt. Americas” (as we called them) were, of any group, the most likely not to be cut out for the work because they usually came from more comfortable backgrounds and had a harder time adjusting to the reality of the job.

I mean before that they had to fill it with immigrants and women, and then the rainbow crew.
This probably didn't help.

While adult obesity rates have shown a slight decline in recent years, the rate for those under 20 continues to trend upward, having quadrupled since the early 1970s when it was only 5.2%.
Cured polio just to have a bunch of young folks unfit to serve.

Boomers are so selfish, that they can’t see the reason for our complaints about them is because we ACTUALLY care about our neighbors. For you, it’s just how much of the juice you can squeeze, not caring about what the children of your children will have to live with. You’re all so pathetic.
What’s remarkable about online boomers is their complete lack of introspection. In all the anti-boomer discourse I’ve seen, I don’t know that I have ever seen one try to honestly engage with the criticism and have an intellectually open debate.

I’d be willing to argue we have similar interest.
It’s Death to America they like to shout over there, too.
Just because we aren’t geographically close to them doesn’t matter.
