When you are a small nation with hostile countries on or near your borders like South Korea and Israel, compulsory military service makes more sense.

Id rather the US fighting force be made up of those who don't need to be compelled to the job.

It makes sense why Israel does it the way they do, but they fund it all. Their soliders can go for service/go fight and be home on nights and/or weekends. They also fund a year after service time to go travel the world and find yourself/have fun/relax before heading to University.

Somehow we actually find this for them

Did he serve? Shapiro?

I did.

If he did not then this is all just a passive aggressive form of stolen valor imho.

This is Peace Corp talk from my childhood. It's all bullshite.

Compulsory Service is not a bad idea, ala Starship Troopers, once they end birthright citizenship ... but frick Ben Shapiro preaching anything like this. I can't stand that POS.

Of course he never served. He’s a blow-hard, neocon, shill for the Zionist state.

He’s worse than that as he chose not to serve even in his beloved IDF - which he was eligible to do.

He is no different than Dick Cheney and Lindsey Graham and the rest of their evil cabal of war pigs.

Maybe he should join. Where was he when our country was involved in 2 wars? Service should not be compulsory. Our ranks need to be filled with capable and competent warfighters ,not a bunch of people who have no motivation to be there.

Absolutely not. Jury duty is unconstitutional as well.

yep. After you graduate high school or , if you dropped out , turn 18, guys and gals . Go do 1 year. Option to stay in or head out. No combat roles (unless you ask for it) . No stop loss or “I got ya” BS. Serve your year then go.

So more people on the government tit. Wouldn't this undermine everything that DOGE is trying to do?

Yes and no.

I understand your point, and it's valid. On the other hand, I think this is one rare time that the benefits would outweigh the cost.

Look, I'm not for the government being able to compel citizens to do anything except follow the law. But we already compel citizens at the business end of a gun to send their children to school that is regulated by the government, which is to say that it is an increasingly useless waste of time. And we're talking about 13 years of that. I have no idea how that egregious violation of freedom passes constitutional muster, but apparently it does.

What's two more years of training combined with actual service? An experience that would get citizens in shape and dispel their potentially idiot notions about guns and cause them to think twice about who they vote for and force them to grow up?

I can think of so many worse things we spend money on.

Yeah, well, that's why it would be in a military type setting.

Anybody who has ever been in the military knows that a drill sergeant can be a hell of a lot more motivating than a mom.

I agree, and the big one that people just take for granted is the government forcing children to attend school. Unconstitutional as hell.

But we do it, and there's no end of it in sight. There's absolutely zero appetite to recognize that for the egregious constitutional violation of liberty that it is.

So if we're not going to adhere to the constitutional spirit of liberty when it comes to a 13 year waste of time, I'm o.k. with not adhering to it for something that would actually benefit the citizenry.

Probably not a terrible requirement.

My basic training platoon (1991) started out with 61 recruits. We graduated 50.

Even in an all volunteer military, it’s not for everyone.

It's not the job of others to fight for Israel. We are to not fight against Israel.
