re: Senator Joe McCarthy Was Correct, Just Too Early

These DSA activists are seeking to destroy our current form of government as defined by the Constitution. Is that not inherently un-American and therefore incompatible with citizenship and public office?

Spying for a foreign nation is illegal. Just saying you are a member of Al Quaeda isnt technically a crime. Being a communist certainly is not.

Every person McCarthy named was a communist spy and after the Soviet Union fell the KGB files proved he was correct.
Do not confuse the House Committee with Joe's spy list. The House unamerican committee was not Senator McCarthy.

Owen Lattimore...he had hot shitty takes on East Asian history and politics, but he wasnt a spy or even proven to be a communist.

Of the people named, only 7 of the 159 he accused turned out to be spies. Now this might seem like vindication, until you realize a few of them were already known to US authorities.
He was right that the soviets were trying to spy in the US, but everyone already knew that.
For the other 152, several of them were actually investigated and the claims were found baseless. While I couldn’t tell you that every single person on his list is definitely innocent, I can say that whenever this man was pressed for proof, he provided none.

Read the book 'Treason' by Ann Coulter. The media was constantly attacking McCarthy and lying about false accusations. Those people were guilty. Her book has a huge section of endnotes with sources.

It sort of makes sense that McCarthy would be adopted as a hero and a sympathetic figure around here. But this is also a "don't tread on me" board and a limited federal government board, which makes the embrace of McCarthy so hypocritical and silly and retarded. The idea behind McCarthyism was to set up a surveillance state, where people snitched on their neigbhors, Soviet style, which is the thing that McCarthy was supposedly fighting against. This is why the people turned on McCarthy, and why he's considered scum.
And for the "well, we live in a surveillance state now," two wrongs don't make a right, and finding a second wrong to make the first wrong okay and acceptable is how children make arguments.
"Don't tread on me" sure does seem to be adaptable and in the eye of the beholder around here!

I’m fairly certain that even the authors of that book don't attempt to vindicate McCarthy.

I’d be curious to know what specific lies were hurled at him. Do you have any examples from her book?

McCarthy wasn’t even early. He was actually on the money.
Spot on. I was going to say this if you hadn’t.
What do they think was “early“ about him?

It was on Feb. 9, 1950, that McCarthy — who had dubbed himself “Tailgunner Joe” for acts of World War II bravery he did not in fact commit — told a crowd of 275 at the Ohio County Republican Women’s Club that the U.S. State Department was “thoroughly infested with communists” and brandished papers he claimed were a list of 57 such subversive.
And that list was never published and later he cut the number down and everyone on that final list was a KGB agent, and the names came from the FBI.
Jesterea you read too much wikipedia,

McCarthy wasn’t too early. There was plenty of infiltration back then. The commies were smart enough to be quiet about it, and had their willing collaborators in the media build pity for the people who were ID’d as commies.
To this day you’ll get sob stories about the commies who were spotlighted.

I have been saying the same thing for a while. A lot of people owe Senator McCarthy and apology.

Even if I grant the final list claim, your own statement shows he made a baseless claim about there being 57 communists in the state department. Why would he not have just published this list?

McCarthy was definitely right and the couple left wingers in here trying to sling mud is evidence of that. They know it's true

Owen Lattimore.
There were also others who were deemed 'innocent' at the time but who were later proven to be communists, like William Remington and Harry Dexter White, who was much later proven to be a Soviet spy after the post-Cold War declassification of Soviet cables.
Funny how some sources still claim that these people were wrongfully accused.

The FBI is the one coming up with the number, he asked them now many. And finally, he asked how many you can prove 100% and that was the real list that was given and it all came from the FBI who was spying on all these people.
The others on the list were never polished in the 1950;s.
