I recommend “The Abolition of Man.”

I've read Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters and The Problem of Pain. I'll have to pick up The Abolition of Man.

The Problem of Pain is highly recommended too. It's short. Like 100 pages. But Lewis' packs so much in one sentence it reads like a 500 page textbook. He makes you ponder hard.

That would be my second recommend. And Abolition of Man is similar.

“Why I am Not a Pacifist” is a great short lecture.

I think it’s in Weight of glory.

Well supposedly they had some pretty heated exchanges. Many a pub pie and ale were tossed.

Screwtape Letters has been one of the most encouraging books I've ever read. Such a unique perspective, approaching the life of a believer from the view of a demon assigned to derail his faith. Read it in 2 days many years ago at a silent Catholic men's retreat at Manresa and need to read it again.

Just a thought, if you haven't already, give his book 'Mere Christianity' a read....might be interesting to you. Good post.

I read it in 8th grade. My older brother got it because it was recommended by the Catholic Church. But he never read it. So I did. It was my first encounter with the concept of 'slippery slope.'
The road to hell is a very gentle, unremarkable road with very gradual changes.

I love C.S. Lewis. I studied him extensively in college. As a Reformed Christian, his writings are a glimpse into my faith and worldview.

However, he did not write that and it is not part of the Screwtape Letters, even though it is in that style.

I don't get all of this Satan would do this horrible thing or do that horrible thing.

The smartest thing Satan would do would be to build the best godless society that he could. You're not saved by bank accounts or works. If you're godless you go to hell. How better to trick someone by making it seem like their lifestyle is working out so well without God?

He doesn't need angst, frustration, general disdain, lack of charity, lack of inner peace, etc. Huge personal issues cause people to seek change. If they're already godless, that change, at least for some, could be seeking God.

I don't think the screwtape letters are all that great.

Can anyone verify is this is even C.S. Lewis?

I googled it and it doesn't look to be.

You are correct. I searched a digital version of The Screwtape Letters, and there is nothing like the quote in the book. Evidently, it is common for social media posters to incorrectly attribute quotes to Lewis.

Fact check debunking a facebook quote attributed to Lewis.

For those interested.

Why do atheist feel so compelled to insert their views on this into discussions with, at best, parenthetical relevance?

Could not the same be said of Christians?

I see it all the time around here. A forceful insertion of no relevance. Often conjoining and conflating two separate virtues as if one depends on the other, namely, religion and morality.

Haven't read it in a while, but are you sure that is an actual quote from Screwtape?

Yeah, it's like the son of God commissioned all of them to spread the news or something.

"the Patient"

“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one--the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts,...Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape.”
