Matthew Yglesias wrote the following excerpt. His point is that both dems and republican senators use the filibuster as a way to pretend to support bills that are popular with their respective bases, and they don’t want to lose that campaigning trick.

His main point here is that dems could trade the SAVE Act for ending the filibuster. He believes that the SAVE Act won’t hurt dems in elections because it will suppress a lot of republican voters who are married women with licenses that don’t show their new name. Ultimately it comes down to whether you believe dems are massively cheating. (I do; he doesn’t).

quote:

The SAVE America Act is a bad bill with questionable provisions that at least a few Republican senators seem to have significant doubts about. But the core concept of requiring voters to use photo ID when they vote is fine.

Meanwhile, the White House and a handful of senators like Lee are wildly overstating the importance of this bill and encouraging Republicans to nuke the filibuster. That’s not going to happen on a party-line G.O.P. vote. But if progressive opponents of the filibuster come to the table and say they’re willing to provide the extra votes needed to scrap it, they could get it done.

The SAVE America Act might pass as a result, its implementation would be a mess, and Democrats could point at that mess and say, “We told you so, vote these morons out.” Alternatively, with no filibuster in place, the Republicans who know this bill is a mess might need to stop hiding behind the filibuster and actually say, “Hey — we support voter ID but we need to roll back the implementation timeline and bring the rules into alignment with current practice.” If they do that, I think Democrats should vote for the revised bill. But one way or another, the world won’t end, and future Congresses will be able to proceed with more sensible rules.

The fundamental stakes of the filibuster are just much, much larger than the rather small stakes of the SAVE America Act. People should think about how they’re going to feel in 2029 and act accordingly today when the prospects for change are better.

That is an interesting take, assuming that married women don’t get new licenses. When I got married, the first two things my wife (no pics) did was to change her SS card and driver’s license.

As would 99% of women, its such a stupid argument. Akin to saying people move and dont go to the DMV to change their address, but change all their other legal documentation.

Yep, I got married in May and my wife had this completed by the end of June. She also had a bit of extra paperwork to do for her naturalization papers.

It meant something to her so she got it done. If other women can’t do that, they shouldn’t be voting.

If you don't change your name on IDs it's got going to change it on a voter registration roll so there you'd still be able to vote it would still all be under the previous name. The majority of the voter rolls are based on the licence

What are all these trannies with fake names and no different IDs do? The same thing obviously

It's a stupid and tired take. My wife had a new SS card and DL within probably 4 weeks of our wedding. The amount of effort involved was low once we had a marriage certificate issued by the county. While it is certainly tradition, there's also no legal requirement for any sort of name change as part of a marriage.

Just another flavor of black people can't get state IDs to give the sheep something to be upset about.

The flaw in his logic is just because he thinks Democrat women are lazy that Republican woman are equally as lazy. Fatal mistake.

His point was that the more educated women, who are most likely to do that, are democrats.

THAT’s not the stupid part. His point is that the improper voting is so small that it would be canceled out by the also small number of republican women who would hit this roadblock.

He’s not arguing that this is a large demographic; he’s arguing that the amount of improper voting that the SAVE Act will prevent is also small. THAT’s your bone of contention.

If a married woman doesn't officially change her name at the DMV, then her name remains the same on the voter rolls and she can vote with her existing license.
