The San Jose City Council voted to draft an ordinance that would order city gun owners to buy insurance and pay an annual fee to subsidize police responses, ambulances, medical treatment and other municipal expenses related to shootings.

San Jose became the first city in the nation to require gun owners to compensate taxpayers for gun violence, a symbolic step toward addressing soaring shooting deaths, including last month’s massacre at a Santa Clara VTA light rail yard.

That tweet gives no details or context. What is the mechanism for gun owners to compensate tax payers?

Does the city of San Jose have a gun registry?

So criminals with guns commit crimes.

Therefore, we must punish the law abiding citizens who own guns and have never committed a crime.

Am I understanding that correctly, liberals?

Cool, can we now force judges and DAs to get expensive insurance (paid out of their own pockets) and hefty fines for the criminals they let off the hook who go on to commit more crimes?

Can we now force BLM to get insured to pay all cities for the damages their mostly peaceful protests cause?

Better wake up.

Voter fraud, ballot harvesting, Dominion, rigged elections can come to you too.

There's a link in the OP to the original story in the San Francisco Chronicle, but the article is behind a pay wall

This is all I could get:

How about we tax vehicle owners to compensate for reckless/drunk driving? Or people with steak knives for knife violence?

I'm sure they'll collect lots of tax dollars from those committing the drive-by shootings, home invasions and car jackings.

If that ordinance actually passed it would have a one-way ticket to shootdownville at the federal judicial level, ultimately the SCOTUS if necessary. Yes, even despite some folks' unfavorable view of the Court at the current time.

Unconstitutional, and SCOTUS will strike it after the CA district courts and the 9th Circuit uphold it.

There is no connection between this measure and any claimed government interest in preventing gun crimes, among many other arguments.

While the San Jose City Council voted to make the insurance payments and fees mandatory, the city cannot directly contact gun owners to enforce compliance because it has no gun registry or other means of locating the owners, Liccardo said.

Instead, said Rachel Davis, a spokeswoman for the mayor, gun owners would be expected to learn of the new requirements through news coverage, social media and City Council proceedings. They would then pay the fees through a city website, increase their insurance coverage and print compliance forms to carry with them. Under the ordinance, police who encounter gun owners lacking proof of compliance will be authorized to confiscate the weapons.

“Crooks aren’t going to follow this law,” Liccardo told reporters. “When those crooks are confronted by police and a gun is identified, and if they haven’t paid the fee or insurance, it’s a lawful basis for seizure of that gun.”

Likewise, he said, when officers respond to a domestic violence call, they ask if anyone has a gun and, under the ordinance, will seize it if the owner has not complied with the new requirements.
...
At Tuesday night’s meeting, Councilmember Maya Esparza said she supported the liability insurance and fee requirements but was concerned about the prospect of warrantless searches on gun owners, which she called a “giant red flag.”

In response, Liccardo said gun owners found in violation of the ordinances would have their weapons seized, but that police officers would “not engage in extensive searches beyond their ordinary duties.”

It’s all mostly legal.

Never hold up in court.

( or at least, it shouldn't. I think Soros has paid off our USSC )

Yeah this garbage will be in TX soon too. The new police chief in Dallas just left San Jose, so I'm sure he likes the sound of this.

And Tarrant County (FTW, etc) just passed a decriminalization ordinance for stuff like no charges for shop lifting under 750, less than 4oz of weed, etc. TX is in a bad path and Abbott isnt doing jack about it.
