The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine was damaged Sunday in a drone attack, the International Atomic Energy Agency said, calling the strike “a serious incident (with) potential to undermine integrity of the reactor’s containment system.”
In a statement posted to X, the IAEA stressed that the damage at the Russian-controlled facility “has not compromised nuclear safety.”
The drone attack included three direct hits against the facility’s main reactor containment, the agency’s director-general, Rafael Grossi, said on X. One person died as a result of the attack, he added.
“This is a clear violation of the basic principles for protecting Europe’s largest (nuclear power plant). Such reckless attacks significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident and must cease immediately,” Grossi said.
Russian authorities accused the Ukrainian military of carrying out a series of attacks against the plant using “self-exploding” drones, according to a statement posted on ZNPP’s official Telegram channel.

Quick question. If this war was real and not political theater, why arent things like power plants the first target.

Russians will not conduct total war against Ukrainians. They are seen as “cousins”. Russia wants the territory AND the people, not just the territory.

You can think this war is retarded (as do I), but there have been hundreds of thousands of casualties, so I am not sure why people keep claiming it's not real.
Russia has targeted power plants hard over the last month, knocking several out of commission for the foreseeable future.
The reason Zaporizhzhia hasn't been destroyed is because it's the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Both sides lose if the worst happens

Quick question.
When did you start paying attention?

This is the same nuclear power plant Zelenski and Lindsey were saying Putin was trying to blow up. The IAEA inspectors were already on site and quickly refuted Zelenski's lies.

Power going out means nothing. A nuclear power plant melting down will have the mindless Muppets calling for a war with Russia even though anti-russian forces were responsible for it.

Bingo!
And the thing is, you don't have to target the actual reactors and power producing elements to be detrimentally efficient. Those reactors can turn and burn at maximum efficiency 24/7, but if the infrastructure to transfer that power where it needs to go is destroyed and interrupted, it's all for naught.
I would opt towards disrupting and destroying elements of the transfer grid. You know, so as to not risk another Chernobyl incident. But that's not what it's about, is it?
If Ukraine is so certain that they're going to retake control of that nuclear power plant and Russia is going to tuck tail and flee, then why risk causing a reactor meltdown and permanently rendering 1,000+ square miles of ground useless as yet another Exclusion Zone?
Makes perfect sense to Damone, I'm sure.

Russia has no interest in the parts of Ukraine where the citizens don't want to be Russian.

Well if your goal is to get a slice of another honey load from US taxpayers, no better way than to alarm the world to a nuclear disaster. Since you are going to live in the numerous villas and penthouses from Miami to Milan, you really dont give a fk if the former country you ran is a nuclear wasteland do you?
Russia is targeting power plants ONES THEY DONT CONTROL, why the heck would they blow up their own power plant? This isnt a Mel Brooks movie... (some of you old fellas will get the analogy).

I’m not a fear monger. A nuclear meltdown over there would not be good for anyone. Even us.

The cia and the warmongers in the US do not care.

The Russians had this idea that they could win while inflicting minimum damage on Ukraine.

Whoever tried to blow up a nuclear reactor is crazy and deserves to be whacked. That's like shooting first in a MAD scenario.

The Ukrainians are suicidal at this point. They will blow up a nuclear plant in Ukraine just to keep the Russians from taking that area. Ukraine is the crazy ex-girlfriend of the world right now. The OT bros will be proud!

How can you have U2 give an impromptu concert in a Kiev subway station/bomb shelter, live and televised to the world, if there is no electricity?

They were. Do you not remember a frozen winter being a central Russian objective in the first year of the war? Ukraine was afraid of freezing specifically because Russia was targeting their electricity infrastructure to keep the lights off and the heat off.
The only difference now is that Ukraine has finally figured out how to make their own cheap drones. So now, they have the capacity to target Russian power plants just like Russia did to them with conventional weapons earlier in the war.
This drone warfare is going to be fascinating to watch. Frankly, it could spiral out of hand quickly. Imagine 20,000 single use drones produced a week, all sent out on suicide missions across the Russian front. Then the question becomes how Putin responds when his anti air defenses get overwhelmed by the volume. My prediction, it won’t be a proportionate response… it could get messy

Most expensive and longest timeframe thing to rebuild. It really is pointless to blow up generation. Just take out substations. They can be rebuilt much faster and are 100% effective.
