My point is that I don't trust the Ukrainians or the Russians at this point to believe what is being reported. The only thing we know for sure is that a plane crashed and what the video shows.
Both sides are going to spin this to their benefit, which is my point.

Did they say anything about it being a missile that if shot at one aircraft would reroute to a larger aircraft in its path?

Well, no news agencies are really debating the fact that it was shot down.
I don't know if Ukraine even has SAMs capable of hitting a plane at that altitude, so that means it was probably the Russians, or seperatists that got a hold of a Russian SAM battery. Thats complete speculation on my part.

I know the radar operating signatures for let's say APG-68 radar. I know it's emmisions signatur. I need the info to be able to jam it.
In other words the active radar for say a certain missile system like the SA-17 is known. So if you pick up target acquisition radar with that signature one could with a level of certainty conclude that system was used.
All this without discounting the fact we are probably dealing with three lying factions
Ukraine
Russia
Seperatists
