Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered the speech on October 7, 2026, from the Pnyx in Athens (the ancient site of the Athenian popular assembly), with the Acropolis and Parthenon behind him at sunset. It framed U.S. policy under President Trump as a defense of Western civilizational continuity rather than a break from it.
The address opened by treating ancient Greece as the origin point of traits Rubio said defined the West and later shaped America: fierce individuality, ambition, exploration, invention, curiosity about nature and the cosmos, and impatience with limits. He noted the Parthenon’s endurance across empires and described a lasting debt owed by the American republic—citing influences on its architecture, institutions, and founding ideas—while identifying himself as the great-grandson of Spanish settlers.
A central critique held that much of the modern West had grown ashamed of those traits. Nationalism was treated as suspect; monuments were torn down; history was condemned; and children were taught to feel ashamed of their countries. In the process, borders were opened, industry was outsourced, militaries declined, and decisions shifted to distant global bureaucracies. Rubio argued this created openings that adversaries filled, and that concepts such as heroism, honor, and duty are not universal but products of a specific Western character.
He positioned the present as a civilizational crossroads: the next decade would shape the next century, determining whether the West maintains its position or accepts atrophy, servitude, and decline. Under President Trump, he said, the United States has chosen “the unapologetic pursuit of national power”—reclaiming critical supply chains, reindustrializing, rebuilding defense, and competing for dominance in technologies, energy, and related fields. He distinguished Western valuation of life and loyalty from adversaries (citing Iran’s leadership as an example of a “cult of death”) and linked Greek ideals of striving for a larger cause to later Western examples, from Christian martyrs to the Declaration of Independence’s pledge of lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.
The close urged Europe to awaken from what he called a long slumber, rekindle the fire lit in Athens, and join the United States in strengthening alliances that preserve distinct national identities while confronting shared threats. Reporting on the speech (including State Department excerpts and contemporaneous accounts) consistently highlights these themes of civilizational inheritance, rejection of decline, and national priority.

Rubio will be the last President of the Republic.

Fun fact:
Despite its ancient origins, Athens was an almost-abandoned city of 5-10,000 people when it was recast as the capital of the newly independent Greece in the 1830’s.

Rubio has a great skillset. The question with him, AS WITH ALL OF THE OTHERS, is how independent he would/could beas President.
I was not a big fan of Rubio as a Senator. But I honestly believe that President Trump has been a good influence on him. I think Rubio has changed over the past few years. As of today, I would support Marco Rubio for President in 2028. (If Eric Trump jumped into the race I would probably support him, though. But as of today, I don't think Eric Trump will be running in 2028).

Rubio 2028.
He's more electable and would be a better POTUS than Vance. This is a no brainer, I hope Trump sees it the same way.

While listening to Rubio's speech, the thought of him in a debate with AOC came to mind. How stupid would he make her look??!!!

CNN: “Rubio delivers hateful, racist remarks and is showered with boos.”

Both are young enough that they can go one after the other.
There is no democrat better than either.

Eric would get absolutely dog walked.
Rubio is the most electable person on either side.

6 downvotes for what was in the OP. More than a little sad.

I think Rubio is one of the best speakers of the past 25 years but I also know he's got a history of cozying up to the DC Uniparty Recucks.

The production and content quality of Rubio's speech is outstanding.

This would be a good thing for Rubio because if he reverts back to Rubio pre Trump he will not get much support from the America First/MAGA contingent of the Republican Party.

Rubio gave a great speech, an appropriate speech for the times we're living in.
To me the overarching message was if Western civilization is going to persevere and remain the dominant culture of the world it's going to take each member nation, who consider themselves part of Western civilization to get off their asses and fight to preserve your own unique culture within Western civilization.
When Rubio finished his nearly 30 minute speech one would have thought there might be a rousing hand of applause, but no, those in attendance gave a lukewarm warm complimentary applause of appreciation that seemed to be like a, "thanks, but no thanks" to Rubio's speech lauding Western civilization.
