You will all hate to hear it but broadly canceling student debt primarily helps richer people. The people with college degrees.

It is better policy to cancel specifically for those who didn't finish college, or better yet provide the funds evenly to all Americans and let the ones with student loans pay it off with that while also helping the 58% of American adults without a college degree, who are disproportionately poorer.

quote:

can safely say that this will be a big factor in the next presidential election in our house. My fiancee has significant student loan debt (significant compared to her income), and the fact that nothing is happening and no help is coming for her or people like her has really been a source of frustration

Edit: for context, I'm a registered Democrat, she's an Independent, and we both voted Democrat across the board in 2020 because, and I can't say this enough, frick Trump and his GOP

quote:

I have a friend who discovered its cheaper for him to continuously enroll in community college and defer his repayments while he's a "student". Its a matter of $350/semester or $795/month.

quote:

Welp.

RIP student loan debt then.

As soon as the pandemic started I stopped paying mine and I don't intend to ever start paying them again. After 13 years of payments and half remains, on top of stagnant wages and a lifetime of overworked and underpaid -- these predatory companies can go frick themselves.

Oh, and the billions that the US government makes on student loan interest? Yeah they can go frick themselves too.

EDIT: getting tons of replies from a bunch of status quo capitalists who selfishly want to convince the world that everyone needs to struggle and that millions in poverty is just business as usual. Turning off notifications because I don't give a frick about your "advice".

quote:

They’re really not gonna do any of the simple things they can do to retain power. Student debt cancellation, federally legal marijuana, any amount of tuition free college. All of these things would be home runs policy-wise and the Democrats are just gonna sit on their hands and put up a bunch of mealy mouthed bureaucratic nonsense all while the country slides into right wing minority rule. Great, awesome.

quote:

Canceling student debt would be an actual boon to the middle class, so of course, the Conservatives will oppose it.

The ignorance in that thread is amazing.

Have a downvote for the flag.

Good luck with Jimbo. He sucked as a coach at FSU and is worse in the SEC.

Kind of goes without saying.

“Free shite” is popular until the bill comes due. How is “free health care” working out for people?

Faggies got kicked out of the SEC?

Did the conference go to don’t ask don’t tell?

This mentality and its apparent growth in this country is why I really do not hold out any hope for any sort of turn around from where we are headed...

Can't you join the military or peace corps and get them paid?

This part is generally true. I've always laughed at the idea that student loan forgiveness was somehow going to help the disadvantaged. LOL. It would be a giant give away to people who, on average, make more than the population.

Same for free college. WTF is that? Free college ain't helping the poor. The poor qualify for college at a far lower rate. Free college is another middle and upper class give away.

I gave you the downvote for the TexAg flag but just realized you are LSU as well (never look at the little icons).

So disregard ... and screw the Aggies ...

Can we pay for these people to leave the country?

it would definitely help the poor, to be fair.

LOTS of poor people do a couple semesters at online colleges, CCs, and universities like Southern and drop/fail out... leaving them with more debt but equal job prospects.

don't get me wrong though... i'm not advocating for loan forgiveness.

Well yeah. It would "help" every income category

It would just help well off people a LOT more!

The costs of a few semesters at a lower institution are nothing compared to one semester at a lot of middle or higher end institutions.

My entire college education, albeit with a partial scholarship, cost less than a semester at some schools at that same time.

I think the FBI should investigate whomever was holding guns to the heads of these students, forcing them to take out loans they voluntarily accepted, and spent the money on getting a BA in Genderqueer Squirrelkin Cinema.

I wish someone would put together a list of how many were on scholarship and took out the loans for living expenses... A lot of that goes on...

Or people who gamed the system for years to stay in school and live off the loans.

There was a guy from my fraternity who was notorious for doing so, such as taking out loans then dropping out mid-semester while passing to keep his eligibility.

There is a total hour cap of X% over a normal degree program in credits achieved.

Someone I know who was in the process of getting a double major had to drop one of the two majors because she hit the threshold for keeping her student loan because there was virtually no overlap in core credits between the two degrees.

I do not see a situation where Biden survives if he doesn’t extend the student loan payment forbearance.
