I learned to skydive on a crappy little two seater plane that they crammed six people into....the pilot was also wearing a parachute...I was glad I was.

I think that was a PA32–a small plane.

I don’t think the guy is a member of the Raytheon board of directors as the OP seems to think. The article says he was an associate director. That is probably a mid level management position of some sort.

Sorry to read of this deadly accident.

I follow some company on instagram that retrofits planes with a system like that. Such a great invention. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t have one.

Because it would be terribly expensive to retrofit. My plane has a parachute. It’s a Cirrus SR22T, and they come standard with ballistic parachutes. Every plane manufacturer must be able to establish that it can recover from a stall. Most planes do it by applying opposite rudder and forward yoke. The Cirrus uses the parachute as stall recovery.

I realized the “Pilot” is a full time job not a hobby!

No. That’s just not true. I fly about 120 hours per year. I’m instrument rated, and I fly through all kinds of weather. If I go three weeks without flying I will be extra careful and deliberate, and that’s the key to safe flying - understanding that risk factors multiply. If you are rusty, tired, feeling less than 100%, flying into an unfamiliar airport or at night you have to account for it. And if you start facing two or more of those you need to be willing to pull the plug on the trip. But you don’t need to be a professional full time pilot to be safe.

My plane is in annual right now. When I pick it up next week it will have been six weeks since I’ve flown. In that circumstance, I will not fly unless there is at least a 1,000 feet ceiling and no other complications.

I know 2 people I'd fly with in their private plane, both military trained. Wouldn't think of flying with anybody else without knowing a helluva lot about them and their training.

That’s an excellent policy, and you are right, the military trained pilots are usually way better than the rest of us. They never seem to lose that discipline.

I thought only the Beech Banaza was.

Is that what he was flying?

My former boss and CEO of the company had a Cirrus SR22 that we used to fly in to meetings around the Southeast. It was always me and him only so the only thing I was adamant about learning was what I needed to do to activate the parachute if he had a medical issue during flight. Pretty simple process but glad I never had to do it.

Not a President, not a vice president … not even a director. Just an associate director.

But you’ll get in a car. Do you think there were any fatal car crashes in America this weekend? But they don’t show up on tigerdroppings.

Doesn't Raytheon have a hypersonic missile defense show coming in a couple weeks?

I drive the car and if something goes wrong i have some agency.

Some dumbass flying a Cessna with bare minimal training and a dearth of backup safety controls = no thanks.

Have at it, though, man.

$10k - 20k isn’t a lot when you’re already in the market for a plane, plus the added safety measure of you know, your life? I learned to fly on 172s like most people, I have seen enough shite go wrong with friends who own them where it seems like a fine investment. Especially where I live.

Usually rich important people are the only ones who can afford private planes so when they crash it always sounds like some rich important guy was taken out.
But if we all owned planes it wouldn’t look so suspicious

I remember back when motorcycle deaths were attributed to the virus and you made the same smartass comments.

No, wait, no you didn't.

Why is that?
