Radioactive spike reported in Ukraine

UK sent depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine.
It's being reported the ammunition site has been hit.
Video of strike
quote:
“A clear spike in gamma radiation was detected in Khmelnitsky on or about May 12th, with emission continuing to rise the following day and remaining at the elevated level thereafter.
Considering how little gamma radiation comes from depleted uranium, this clear spike in gamma radiation in Khmelnitsky indicates that there was very large stockpile of the DU munitions that was destroyed, raising the uranium dust into the air.
By comparison, the towns of Ternopol, Khmilnik, and Novaya Ushitsa remained at their apparent regular, base levels. This indicates that the Khmelnitsky anomaly is indeed a spike and corroborates the claim that the stockpile in Khmelnitsky contained DU munitions.”
Now neighboring areas are elevated.
Why would Britain send DU munitions to Ukraine?

Lots of ammunition is DU. You can't penetrate armor without using DU rounds.
As an Abrams tanker for 22 years, we had 2 types of service ammunition: Sabot rounds with DU penetrators and HEAT rounds which were basically C4 rounds which were for light armor.
Hell, the armor in an Abrams has DU in it.

That's what we call a dirty bomb

I don't think that level could be achieved by just DU rounds being destroyed. That's just the summation of the entire ammo depot being blown up and whatever radioactive traces were in crap stored there.
DU rounds aren't really shocking for a western army to send considering that's what the sabot penetrators are. It's not really much of a story. The bigger issue would be for the enemy to figure out the exact alloy and manufacturing process.
ETA: Apparently DU rounds ignite when exposed to oxygen. (Someone please fact check me on this if I'm wrong). So maybe the spiked levels could in fact be purely due to the DU rounds. Fascinating.

Holy shite
That was no ammo storage facility going up
I'd have believed fuel but ammo isn't going to all go off simultaneously

Just posting this as a reference:
Makes sense that the spike in gamma radiation is coming from depleted uranium munitions.

No the hell it doesn't
Natural uranium emits alpha particles, DU is less radioactive than natural uranium. Those are basically ionized Helium nuclei that come off the Uranium nucleus as it decays. So long as it stays outside your skin, it can't do much damage to you. It's safe to handle. Every modern armored vehicle has DU in its armor.
The danger in DU is when it burns. Inhilation of the fumes and/or dust causes those DU particles to end up inside you where not only heavy metal poisoning wreaks havoc, so do those alpha particles. Not gamma radiation which would be from a nuclear reaction, which DU isn't fricking fissile.

don't have to store them now

I don't think depleted uranium rounds are going to cause uptick in Gamma radiation.

This is not good and concerns me greatly.
