It's true that very little gamma radiation comes from depleted uranium. So this clear spike in gamma radiation in Khmelnitsky indicates that there was a very large stockpile of the DU munitions that was destroyed, distributing uranium dust into the air.
It's like the solution to pollution is dilution, in reverse.
