I really don’t know if it’s constitutional but it seems like it would be a real twisting of constitutional law to forgive student loans, even if they’re issued and serviced by the government.

If the belief is the government holds most of the loans therefore the illegitimate regime has the power to purchase votes by loan forgiveness this country is fricked. As I’ve said on numerous occasions, why not government backed mortgages?

If you think the government should have the power to forgive student loan debt give an upvote…..if you believe it’s insane and reckless behavior give a down vote.

Read Article I and then get back to us.

Edited to add the text from the Constitution.

Article I, Sect. 8:

Section 8.

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

To borrow money on the credit of the United States….

Article I, Sect. 9:

No money shall be drawn from the treasury, but in consequence of appropriations made by law; and a regular statement and account of receipts and expenditures of all public money shall be published from time to time.

Maybe if Congress did it but certainly not the president on his own.

As a follow up I am curious about who believes that any non dischargeable debt is constitutional. Indentured servitude was made illegal by the 13th amendment.

General welfare….lol, that shite can be twisted and interpreted to mean it’s in the best interest of the US to forgive student loans while ensuring a few million Dim voters get some motivation to get to the polls. This nation is not going to survive the bastardization of the written and spoken language by the cultural Marxists.

Of course it's not.

But until the right comes to the realization the other side doesn't care, and our politics is now a zero sum game, the other side will keep destroying us.

Political will and conviction is what moves the needle. The Constitution and Rule of Law is just window dressing, only there for politicians to give lip service when needed.

Yeah, you’re in left field buddy. It’s a loan, not slavery. The fact that the debt is generally non-dischargeable (there are limited exceptions in the bankruptcy code) doesn’t violate the constitution.

It’s constitutional if Congress passes a bill and the President signs it. But of course it’s not constitutional for a President to simply forgive them.

Debt forgiveness is just the clever name for buying votes from young people by paying off their student loans with funny money they printed out of thin air.

Yep! I don’t think a politician should be allowed to tell their potential voters,

“I’m gonna take money directly from your political opponents through taxes and give it to you.”

So the congress can pass laws promoting the general welfare—that’s a power Congress has. The president doesn’t make law in our system, and when he does, it’s usually a sign that something isn’t legal—like when he decided to “forgive” student loan debt. Congress can do that, the president can’t.

I think the last total I heard was around $60 billion of student loans for public sector/government workers has already been granted.

This doesn't fly, because folks go to jail...ALL...THE...TIME...for non-payment of taxes.

The logic follows - Govt guarantees the debt so it is made with minimum qualifying rules and, relatively, cheaply at origination. Ergo, the other side of the deal is - if the borrower defaults, Uncle Sugar makes the lender whole and then collects the debt through its taxing authority (and, also ergo, non-dischargeable for the same reasons).

Now, should there be tighter standards for these loans? Yes. Should there be a limitation on how much one can borrow for a basket weaving/gender studies/poli sci/English lit degree? Absolutely.

But, is student loan "forgiveness" some sort of natural right or a failure to do so some form of slavery? Nah, bruh.

(ETA: Obviously Congress could pass a general forgiveness package through its Constitutional taxing/spending authority, but not the President through any sort of "executive" action without some sort of Congressional spending authority.)

We’re giving billions to a prima Dona running around in a green suit pretending he can beat Russia if we only give him $50 billion more.

I’m not in favor of free handouts, but we could’ve spent that $1 trillion to date on Americans, and not a laundering front. Student loans, infrastructure, small businesses, who cares.

After all the money we gave to that freaking corrupt government in Ukraine, I don't care anymore.

I would rather forgive all the student loans than pay one dime toward WWIII.
