I almost got tossed out a class back in 1990 for arguing politics with a hippie TA in a sociology class...I can ASSURE you that no one was going to ask me that question and not get challenged.
But...and here's the thing...if you've had a kid in school the past 20 years you know that one of the main goals has not been to help foster independent thinkers but to build followers. They spend more time enforcing meaningless rules to shape children into little drones that will follow orders than they do critical thinking. It's actually asking a lot from today's kids to speak up in that environment, especially if you are expecting them to not only argue with a teacher but to do so in a 180 degree opposite direction than the current socially acceptable direction.
