What was the "huge deal"? He tried to get them to agree to terms but they refused partly because how they were treated by the Bush administration and Clinton administration. This was like an 8 year ordeal wasnt it?

The Clinton deal was basically "we're going to do x for you but we expect you to do y in return." We gave them a frickton of money and they never went through with their end.

The Obama deal may have worked out but neither side was really serious about the negotiation. Also, Obama did not have the demeanor to bring Kim to heel, which is a necessity with Kim's sort of mindset. Trump's bravado channeled the claims about Reagan leading up (and just prior) to the 1980 election that he would get us into WW3.

With a more nuanced leader you can make a legitimate "gentle giant" approach (which is what our foreign policy approach has pretty much been since HW, maybe even Reagan). Kim is not one of those, he sees that as a weakness. Kim is one of those dictators respect only someone with more power than they have themselves and who isn't afraid of using it against them.
